Sierra Wireless and Telefonica Collaborate to Demonstrate HSPA Technology at 3GSM World Congress

3GSM WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 12 / -- Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ:SWIR)(NASDAQ:-)(NASDAQ:TSX:)(NASDAQ:SW) today announced the company is collaborating with Telefonica Moviles Espana to demonstrate the latest in 3G wireless technology at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona. Telefonica will host demonstrations of the recently launched Sierra Wireless AirCard® 875 wireless data card for HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) networks, and will also utilize prototypes of the newly unveiled AirCard 880 PC card for a live, over-the-air demonstration of HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technology.

Telefonica is the first European network operator to launch the Sierra Wireless AirCard 875 wireless wide area PC card. The AirCard 875 provides mobile workers and business travelers with high-speed wireless access to email and online information across Spain and worldwide. Featuring a high-performance antenna in a rugged housing that includes integrated status indicator lights and a new, low-profile design, the AirCard 875 offers Receiver Equalization to reduce signal interference and improve throughput for customers in urban areas with high levels of signal noise. Supporting tri-band HSDPA/UMTS and quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM, the card operates at the best available speed, up to 3.6 Megabits per second (Mbps) on an HSDPA network, and roams on networks worldwide.

The AirCard 880, designed to take advantage of the faster uplink speed offered by next-generation HSUPA technology, is part of HSUPA demonstrations taking place in Telefonica's stand (8B-178). Like the AirCard 875, the AirCard 880 offers tri-band UMTS/HSPA and quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM access, enabling it to roam on high-speed networks worldwide. Additional features new to the AirCard product line are simultaneous Receive Diversity and Equalization, which improve the card's performance, and GPS support for location based services such as mapping, weather, and traffic information applications. Commercial shipments of the AirCard product line for HSUPA networks are expected to begin mid-year 2007.

"HSUPA's increased uplink speed opens the door to new and exciting applications for mobile data, particularly for those who generate large files like photos and video that need to be uploaded for review, publishing, or archiving," said Jim Lahey, vice president, EMEA for Sierra Wireless. "It's a key development in mobile data, and we're delighted to be able to work with Telefonica to demonstrate the very latest in our AirCard product line."
