Siemens to Upgrade Pipeline Stations in South Africa

Erlangen, Germany, September 3, 2009 - Siemens Energy has won three orders to upgrade existing pump stations in South Africa. The customer is Transnet Pipelines, a division of Transnet Limited, the main transport utility in South Africa. The three pipeline delivery and routing stations are located in the Gauteng and the Mpumalanga provinces. The total order value including mechanical and civil work is approximately EUR 30 Mio.

"Our pipeline team has had a close working relationship with Transnet Pipelines for more than 10 years now," said Tom Blades, CEO of the Oil & Gas Division of Siemens Energy. "We differentiate ourselves by being able to provide customers with automated, fully integrated solutions optimizing operating reliability and efficiency. Equally important is our after sales support covering not only maintenance but also upgrading and entire life cycle support for pipeline infrastructures."

The Siemens scope of supply comprises engineering, procurement, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and SAT of the SCADA, automation and custody transfer metering of the two pipeline delivery stations in the Gauteng Province and a switching station in the Mpumalanga Province. This upgrade will be executed while the pipeline is in operation. The final handover is scheduled for mid 2010. A year ago Siemens was awarded by Transnet Pipelines the SCADA, automation and security systems for their new multiproduct pipeline project (NMPP) which is expected to go operational in 2010.

The Siemens pipeline portfolio encompasses compressors with electric drives or gas turbine drives, transformers, substations, breakers and automation, communications and safety equipment. These solutions contribute toward meeting customer requirements such as pipeline operational reliability, safety and efficiency.
