Siemens Power Generation (PG) has recently been awarded a major contract to supply key equipment for a new coal-fired power station in West Virginia. By using the most advanced technologies, with ultra-supercritical steam conditions, the project will be one of the cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power plants in the United States. The purchaser is Longview, Power LLC (Longview), a subsidiary of GenPower Holdings, L.P. The total consortium order volume is over $1 billion, with the Siemens portion being over $405 million.
"Today, coal-generated electricity represents more than 50 percent of the generation capacity in the United States and 40 percent globally, and will continue to be an important fuel in the overall mix," said Randy Zwirn, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Power Generation, Inc. and member of the PG Group Executive Management. "The Longview project demonstrates that coal-based generation using highly efficient energy conversion technology and advanced emission controls can be compatible with the environment," said Zwirn.
Ultra-supercritical steam conditions, at a steam temperature just below 600 degrees Celsius and a high pressure of approximately 250 bar, enable extremely high plant efficiencies. The scope of supply for Siemens PG comprises turbine island design, as well as major turbine island equipment, including a steam turbine, generator, plant control system, and an advanced air quality control system to help reduce the emissions of particulates, sulfur dioxide, mercury, and sulfur trioxide. The boiler will be supplied by Foster Wheeler North America Corporation. As a consortia partner with Siemens, Aker Kvaerner Songer, Inc., will provide construction services and materials for the turbine island and boiler island.
Site construction is scheduled to begin immediately, and operation is slated for spring of 2011. The Longview project represents one of the largest private investments in West Virginia. Longview will produce almost 700 MW of clean, coal-fired energy to the region.
