Siemens to Supply Key Components for New CO2 Capture Project in Canada

Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract from the engineering and construction company SNC-Lavalin, Toronto, Ontario, to deliver two vapor compressors for a post combustion CO2 and SO2 capture plant at Unit 3 at SaskPower's Boundary Dam Power Station near Estevan, Saskatchewan.

The coal-fired Boundary Dam power plant, with an installed capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW), is owned by the Canadian utility SaskPower. Unit 3 will be integrated into a Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) demonstration project. The primary goal of this project is to generate up to 120 MW of clean baseload electricity while reducing green house gas emissions. It is planned to capture one million tons of carbon dioxide per year. The project will go into operation in 2014. Siemens will deliver integrally-geared, motor-driven lean vapor compressors which would enable an overall reduction in the steam consumption.

"Our cutting-edge compressor technology with low power consumption in the compression process is key to enhancing the power plant's efficiency in capturing CO2," said Christian Gerbaulet, responsible for Predesigned Compressors and Fans (PCF) within the Compressions & Solutions Business Unit of Siemens Energy's Oil and Gas Division.

Solutions for CO2 compression and capture are part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world's largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, the company's products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2009 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.8 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR30 billion and posted a profit of EUR3.3 billion. On September 30, 2009, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 85,100. Further information is available at: http://www.siemens.com/energy.
