Siemens Supplies Baggage Handling System Worth Around 36 Million Euros for Delhi Airport

Erlangen, Germany, July 7, 2008

Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to supply a baggage handling system for the new Terminal 3 at Delhi International Airport (IATA code: DEL). The system will have a throughput of more than 11,300 pieces of baggage per hour. A baggage X-ray system for full inspection will also be integrated. The total value of the contract amounts to 36 million euros. Completion of the project is scheduled for the March 2010.

According to estimates of the IATA, the number of passengers in India is expected to grow by an average of 8.6 per cent per year up to 2011. This makes India one of the ten countries with the highest growth rates in terms of passenger numbers. In 2007, 24 million passengers were handled at the airport of the Indian capital and in 2010, 30 million passengers are expected. In order to cope with the rapidly rising number of passengers, four new terminals and a fourth runway are to be built by 2026. As a first step, the new Terminal 3 is due for completion by March 2010. It will have 78 Boarding Bridges for national and international passengers. The terminal is designed to handle 34 million passengers.

Siemens Mobility is supplying the baggage handling system for the project. Bags can be handed in at 168 check-in desks at the departures level of the terminal, which covers an area of 520,000 m2. For oversize luggage, there will be five desks available. A total of 28 X-ray stations will be integrated in the system so that all baggage can be subjected to a 100% security inspection. The sorting system has been designed for a capacity of over 11,300 bags per hour and has a total length of almost 13 kilometers. Tilt-tray sorters as well as vertical sorters and high-speed diverters will be used. In addition, the system includes make-up carousels. At the arrivals level of the new terminal, twelve baggage claim systems will ensure problem-free distribution of baggage to travelers.
