Siemens Receives Additional Order for Complete Solar Field in Spain

Siemens Energy has received another order for the supply of a solar field for a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in Spain. The Arenales parabolic trough power plant is located near Morón de la Frontera in Andalucía in Southern Spain. Customer and general contractor of the CSP plant is Ecolaire España, a company of the OHL Industrial (OHL Group). After commissioning end of 2013, the plant with a capacity of 50 megawatts will supply ecofriendly power to approximately 50.000 Spanish households. This is the second order for Siemens for an entire solar field.

The Siemens scope of supply for the Arenales parabolic trough power plant encompasses the complete solar field, consisting of 156 loops which include the mirrors and the UVAC receiver. With this type of solar thermal power plant the sun's energy is concentrated by parabolic mirrors on a small surface area. A receiver tube is located in the focal line of the half-open sun-tracking mirrors. Thermo oil as the heat transfer medium circulates within the tube. The heated oil produces steam in a heat exchanger, which is used to generate electricity with the aid of a steam turbine-generator. A special feature of this plant is a thermal storage unit which allows power generation after the sun goes down. The project is owned by RREEF Infrastructure (49 percent), Solar Millennium AG (26 percent) and OHL Industrial (25 percent).

In July 2011, Siemens has announced the supply of a complete solar field to the Olivenza CSP plant in Extremadura, Spain. Together with the Arenales projects, Siemens is now constructing 100 MW of complete solar fields.

Solar power is part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR28 billion, making Siemens the world's largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 270 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of the megacities Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.
