Siemens Hands over Enecogen Combined Cycle Power Plant in the Netherlands Ahead of Schedule

Siemens Energy has officially handed over the Enecogen combined cycle power plant in the Netherlands to the joint venture of the Dutch utility Eneco and the Danish company DONG Energy. After a construction period of only 30 months the power plant with a capacity of approximately 870 megawatts (MW) was handed over to the customer on October 21, 2011, 20 days ahead of schedule. With a very high efficiency, maximized flexibility and low nitrogen oxide emissions, the plant will supply ecofriendly electricity to more than 1.4 million households.

The Enecogen gas-fired combined cycle power plant is located in the industrial zone in the port of Rotterdam. It consists of two single-shaft units and attains an efficiency significantly above 59.5 percent. It thus also produces very low CO2 emissions. The plant's units are designed for 290 starts per year and reach full load after approximately 50 minutes. In tandem with CO2-free wind turbines, whose feed-in fluctuates with wind availability, the plant can quickly compensate the required capacity. "This new power plant impressively demonstrates how assured supply, operating economy and environmental compatibility can be harmonized," said Lothar Balling, head of Gas Turbine Power Plant Solutions in Siemens Fossil Power Generation Division.

Enecogen consists of two single-shaft units with the main components arranged on a single line of shafting. Siemens erected the plant as a turnkey project and supplied two SGT5-4000F gas turbines, two SST5-5000 steam turbines, two hydrogen-cooled generators and the entire electrical and SPPA-T3000 I&C equipment. The company also signed a long-term service agreement for these components.

High-efficiency combined cycle power plants are part of Siemens' environmental portfolio, with which the company earned revenues of around Euros30 billion in fiscal year 2011. This makes Siemens the world's largest supplier of environmentally friendly technology.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for power generation in thermal power plants and using renewables, power transmission in grids and for the extraction, processing and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2011 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of EUR27.6 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR34.8 billion and posted a profit of more than EUR4.1 billion. On September 30, 2011, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 97,000. Further information is available at: http://www.siemens.com/energy.
