Siemens Awarded Contracts for Advanced Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical Systems in the U.S.

Within the scope of these contracts the company will upgrade the existing control systems of five Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) power plants with SPPA-T3000 system. A second award Siemens received from Voith Hydro, Inc. to install its turn-key SPPA-E3000 electrical solutions at four new power houses of American Municipal Power's (AMP) Ohio River run-of-river power stations.

The Siemens scope of supply consists of providing SPPA-T3000 control upgrades for the Chattahoochee combined cycle energy facility, in addition to its Smarr, Hawk Road, Sewell Creek and Talbot County simple cycle energy facilities located in the state of Georgia. Siemens will supply its SPPA-T3000 control system for the 17 gas turbines, one steam turbine, two heat recovery steam generators and the balance-of-plant controls until March 2014. "The new SPPA-T3000 control system stands out due to its easy handling, high performance and low life cycle cost," said Joerg Holzapfel, General Manager of Siemens Energy's U.S. Instrumentation & Electrical Business Unit. "Based on these qualities the new system is increasingly becoming the control system of choice for power plants throughout the United States," he stated.

With the Siemens SPPA-E3000 electrical solutions four new power houses of the Ohio River project will be modernized. The plants are located in the counties West Virginia and Kentucky. The new electrical system will provide the electrical controls, as well as synchronization, coordination and protection for all of the 11 bulb turbines. "Our ability to build, integrate, test and commission automation projects of the magnitude of the Ohio River project all under the same roof is a unique capability that is of great value to our customer base", added Holzapfel.
