New GaStrut Design from Parker Doubles Suspension Life

New GaStrut(TM) design from Parker uses customized gas spring to double life of suspension units in heavy-duty mobile equipment

ROCKFORD, IL - December 11, 2006 - Parker Hannifin's Hydraulic Accumulator Division introduces the new Accumulator GaStrut(TM) technology to absorb shock in heavy-duty mobile suspension applications such as mining and construction equipment.

Integrating cylinder and accumulator technologies, the GaStrut utilizes a compact, robust piston design in a high-pressure nitrogen atmosphere. This improves shock-absorption, allowing for increased vehicle speed and less operator fatigue, which results in higher overall productivity.

The GaStrut has also proven to double the life of the suspension unit in such heavy-duty applications as mobile mining equipment. This dramatically lowers maintenance costs and downtime for major overhauls common with air bag and conventional spring suspensions. The GaStrut also carries lower installation costs than these designs.

The improved performance and durability is due to the high-pressure capabilities of the GaStrut design. Parker's sealing technology allows nitrogen to be stored at high pressures - up to 10,000 psi - without leaking down. This highly-pressurized nitrogen carries much greater energy absorption than low pressure air bags. Also, the steel construction of the GaStrut provides much greater load-carrying capacity and durability than rubber air bags.

Initial GaStrut design applications include mining and construction mobile equipment where demanding, high force loads often cause premature failure of air bag and conventional suspension systems. According to Parker, the GaStrut technology has virtually limitless shock-absorbing application potential.
