New Shielded Inductors Reduce Board Space Requirement

SMRF 5025S Inductors for RF Applications Allow Closer Mounting on Circuit Board

15 July 2003, Gowanda, NY (USA) - Gowanda Electronics announces the introduction of a new series of surface mount inductors - SMRF 5025S - which has high performance shielding designed into the inductor, allowing electronic components to be mounted closer together on circuit boards in RF applications. This new inductor series enables design engineers to consider reductions in the surface area of the circuit board design in an effort to address the market need for smaller and smaller products.

This shielded SMRF 5025S series is targeted for use in RF applications where coupling between board components is a concern due to board density. Applications for this series include all RF signal circuitry in communications equipment, test & measurement equipment, medical diagnostic equipment and industrial process control equipment. Other applications include use in telecommunications, disk drives, computers and modems and other computer peripherals, as well as in security systems, instrumentation, bar code and laboratory analysis equipment, aviation equipment, navigation equipment, electronic test equipment, and cable TV.

The electromagnetic shielding is accomplished by placing a sleeve of magnetic material directly over the coil winding. Gowanda's manufacturing process enhances the centering of the magnetic shield which results in extremely consistent, minimum coupling from part to part. This approach tends to provide a more effective magnetic closed gap compared to the distributed gap materials incorporated in molding compounds. Gowanda's process provides shielding with typically less than 2% coupling vs. distributed gap materials which provide 3% to 5% coupling.

As with its other inductors, the company uses a semiconductor grade molding material and high temperature solder on the internal connection which results in robust and dependable components.

Technical specifications for products in the SMRF 5025S series include: inductance from .10 to 10,000 microHenries and incremental current ratings from 3900 to 54 mAmps DC (based on a 35°C temperature rise at ambient temperature of 90°C).

The SMRF 5025S series essentially provides design engineers a COTS surface mount equivalent of the company's molded RF shielded axial leaded "17S" MIL STD inductor series.

The Gowanda Electronics SMRF 5025S series of surface mount inductors offers custom designs that meet the specific requirements of an application. For design details or custom requirements contact Gowanda Electronics at (716) 532-2234 or check the company website at www.gowanda.com.
