Methode's Datamate Products Division Introduces the Industry's First RJ45 SFP Transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet over Category 5 UTP Cable

CHICAGO, IL--dataMate Products, a division of Methode Electronics, Inc., introduces the industry's first Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver which offers Gigabit Ethernet speeds over Category 5 unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) copper cable. This product brings gigabit-level performance to environments with an existing (or new) infrastructure of Category 5 UTP--while adding the high-density benefit of the compact SFP form factor. The product mates using a conventional RJ45 interface, and fits into industry-standard MSA-compliant SFP equipment. This transceiver eliminates the need for exotic copper cable or expensive fiber optic cable to achieve gigabit-speed bi-directional communication.

dataMate's RJ45 SFP transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet over Cat 5 UTP is ideal for LAN backbones or drops up to 100 meters (325 feet) where gigabit performance is needed using standard Cat 5 UTP cable. Furthermore, this transceiver has proven itself capable of exceeding this 100 meter Gigabit Ethernet standard in many application environments.

The compact SFP packaging is analogous to a reduced-size GBIC, and allows the density of equipment racks to be virtually doubled. A number of equipment OEMs have already introduced racks designed for use with the SFP form factor.

One of the keys to achieving gigabit performance in the compact SFP package has been dataMate's development of an RJ45 connector with built-in magnetic coupling circuitry. The Ethernet physical layer specification mandates the use of a magnetically-coupled interface. This requirement has made it difficult for other transceiver OEMs to fit everything into an SFP package, and still achieve reliable gigabit performance. dataMate's proprietary connector technology has solved this problem, while maintaining industry-standard RJ45 form, function, and compatibility.

dataMate's hot-pluggable Gigabit Ethernet SFP transceiver operates from a single +3.3V power supply, and is packaged in a die cast metal housing delivering superior EMI and RFI performance. A special ejector latch design facilitates disconnection of RJ45 cable assemblies even when transceivers are closely ganged together in equipment racks. The latches are available in virtually any color, making it easy to identify transceiver type.

The transceiver is fully compliant with all applicable industry standards including IEEE 802.3 1000Base-T. Serial ID functionality is standard, and the units can be ordered with custom ID information to meet the user's specific requirements.

dataMate's new SFP transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet over Cat 5 UTP is the latest addition to the company's family of SFP solutions, including their SFP-to-HSSDC-2 Converter, Active and Passive Patch Cord Assemblies, Copper Loopback, SMT 20-Position Connector, and EMI Transceiver Cage.

Samples of dataMate's SFP transceiver for Gigabit Ethernet over Cat 5 UTP will be available during 1Q2003.
