Several Automation Orders Demonstrate Global Tissue Making Industry's Trust in Metso's Technologies

With Metso's advanced tissue automation solutions and services, global tissue makers are able to turn their process and quality challenges into visible results.

Turkish Hayat Kimya A.S., a global player in the tissue market and the current holder of the world speed record for tissue machines, has chosen Metso’s automation technology for its two new tissue production lines that it ordered from Metso. One of the lines will be installed at a new mill site near Alabuga, Tatarstan, in Russia, and the other one in Mersin, Turkey.

The extensive automation delivery will include Metso DNA machine and process controls and Metso IQ quality controls. Complete engineering, installation supervision, training, startup and commissioning are also included in the delivery.

Both tissue machines will have a width of 5.6 m, a design speed of 2,200 m/min and a design capacity of 70,000 tons a year of high-quality facial, toilet and towel grades made from virgin fiber. The startup of the tissue machine in Russia is planned for the second half of 2014, and the second tissue machine will start up in Turkey at the end of 2015.

Automation also for Syktyvkar Tissue

Another tissue producer that has selected Metso’s automation is Syktyvkar Tissue Group in Russia. Its recent order for a complete Metso tissue production line also includes Metso DNA automation for process, machine and drive controls and Metso IQ quality controls.

The new tissue machine will be installed at the company’s new site in Semibratovo, located some 220 km from Moscow. The new line will have a width of 2.7 m and an operating speed of 2,000 m/min, and it will add another 30,000 tons per year of bathroom tissue, napkin and towel grades to the company's existing production. The startup of the machine is scheduled for mid-2014.

Metso introduces novel measurements for tissue

“A wave of recent breakthrough developments in automation is revolutionizing the quality and runnability management of tissue lines,” says Seyhan Nuyan, Director, Pulp, Paper, and Tissue Applications, Automation, Metso. “Our comprehensive but scalable automation solution is geared towards optimum productivity, energy efficiency and product quality. This comprehensive automation concept is now complemented with new products.”

One such new introduction is IQ Web Color Measurement. This novel sensor is the first of its kind capable of measuring color or brightness of the finished tissue or towel product.

The new deliveries include another recent innovation by Metso, the non-nuclear basis weight sensor, Metso IQ Fiber Weight Measurement, which also measures the moisture content of the web.

Hayat Kimya A.S. is part of the Hayat Group that primarily operates in the chemicals, hygienic products, paper and wood-based industries. Through the new investment and ongoing projects, the total production capacity of Hayat Kimya will reach 350,000 tons.

Syktyvkar Tissue Group is one of the best-known companies on the Russian market for tissue products with a market share of around 10%. The company employs 385 people and produces approximately 45,000 tons of tissue. Its headquarters and existing production facilities are located in Syktyvkar, capital of the republic of Komi in the northwestern part of Russia
