Original Press Release:

High-Efficiency, High-Torque Servo Motors from Rockwell Automation Designed to Meet Food and Beverage Packaging and Handling Demands

New Allen-Bradley MP-Series Food Grade Motors give food and beverage OEMs high performance and installation flexibility

MEQUON, Wis., Oct. 9, 2003 - Designed specifically for the harsh environments of food and beverage packaging and handling applications, the new Allen-Bradley MP-Series Food Grade Motors (MPF Motors) enable food and beverage OEMs to apply high-performance servo motors for improved product throughput, machine flexibility, and precision. As an addition to the compact, plant-floor-proven MP-Series family, the MP-Series Food Grade Motors share similar mounting and performance features, while giving users advanced sealing techniques and non-corrosive food-grade fasteners and coatings for extended performance.

Available with continuous stall torque of 1.6 to 19.4 Nm (14-173 lb-in.), the MP-Series Food Grade Motors include a shaft seal with a hardened wear sleeve for long life. Special IP67-rated connectors can be rotated 180 degrees without the use of tools to enable optimum positioning without risking seal integrity. Food-grade grease and durable chip-resistant food-grade epoxy paint allow users to mount the motors above the food line, adding installation flexibility. The motor shaft and all fasteners are stainless steel, which reduces corrosion caused by exposure to cleaning solutions and food by-products. The servo motors are both IP66- and IP67-rated for protection against liquid contamination. An optional positive air pressure system also is available for added protection against liquid ingress. The excellent torque-to-inertia ratio of the MP-Series Food Grade Motors allows them to accelerate quickly. The faster a motor is capable of accelerating and decelerating, the less time it takes to move a load. With manufacturers continually striving for higher throughput and capacity, this gives OEMs and machine builders a significant selling advantage over competitive machines.

The MP-Series Food Grade Motors are a part of the Kinetix Integrated Motion solution, which includes the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or SoftLogix controller, SERCOS interface digital motion module, Allen-Bradley servo drives, motors, and actuators. For applications that require high-end accuracy and precision, the MP-Series Food Grade Motors offer high-resolution feedback for smooth operation. An absolute feedback option is capable of positioning the servo system to within 1/1millionth of a revolution and eliminates frequent time-consuming homing routines. The multi-turn absolute encoders allow users to know the exact machine position of servo-controlled moving parts the instant power is applied. This ensures immediate resumption of operation following a power-supply interruption without having to return to a reference point.
