Adept Technology to Preview Low Cost OEM Multi-Axis Embedded Servo Motion Controller

New Adept MotionBlox(TM) Multi-Axis Servo Controller Offers Complete Standalone Control in a Compact Package for OEM Mechanisms

Livermore, California - July 9, 2003 - Adept Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: ADTK.OB), a leading manufacturer of flexible automation for the semiconductor, electronics, fiber optic, telecommunications, and life sciences industries, today announced it plans to preview the new Adept MotionBlox* multi-axis servo controller at SEMICON West July 14-18 in San Francisco (booth #2442) and San Jose (booth#11928), CA. The new motion controller is the first of its kind to integrate high-level machine control, servo control, servo drives, digital I/O, safety and E-stop circuitry into one compact package designed to be embedded directly into an OEM's mechanism.

"This unique architecture provides significant savings by allowing OEMs to incorporate the complete controller package into the machine or mechanism instead of external electronics," said Charlie Duncheon, executive vice president of Adept Technology. "We believe the demand for small, high-performance embedded motion control is growing as machine builders strive for lower costs and improved performance. The Adept MotionBlox Controller provides a unique solution to this growing OEM need, leveraging over 20 years of Adept's experience deploying industrial, high-performance robots and advanced servo motion control."

The scalable design of the Adept MotionBlox platform offers OEMs, machine and robot builders a complete standalone motion solution for 4 axes of coordinated motion, with expansion capability to 8 axes, including absolute encoder support and complex kinematics solutions. The Adept MotionBlox is also compatible with the Adept SmartController(TM), which integrates multi-axis mechanisms, vision, digital I/O, Ethernet, RS-232, RS-422/485 and DeviceNet. The Adept SmartController can control up to 24 axes of coordinated motion across multiple mechanisms. The Adept MotionBlox(TM) platform also supports the Adept SmartServo(TM) distributed motion control architecture, which replaces hundreds of wires and connections with a single cable, using a FireWire® (IEEE-1394) based high-speed control bus, reducing costs, increasing reliability and simplifying installation. Additionally, FireWire and Ethernet connectivity to the PC provides real-time open architecture controls via ActiveX(TM) while maintaining the reliability required in industrial environments.
