Rockwell Automation Broadens Its Integration Motion Offering with Compact Allen-Bradley Kinetix(TM) 6000 Servo Drive

Powerful simplicity of new servo drive helps OEMs and end users save time and money while improving machine performance

MEQUON, Wis., April 25, 2002 - In response to OEM and end-user demands for integrated motion control that simplifies machine design, installation and operation, complete automation leader Rockwell Automation today introduced the Allen-Bradley Kinetix(TM) 6000 servo drive.

Designed to make wiring, programming, operation and diagnostics faster and easier, Kinetix 6000 servo drives can decrease OEM engineering and installation time while adding flexibility for demanding motion applications. Target applications for the Kinetix 6000 servo drive include packaging, material handling, converting and assembly.

Reducing motion complexity with an integrated approach. The Kinetix 6000 drive is a key element of the Kinetix Integrated Motion control solution, which includes the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix(TM) controller, SERCOS interface(TM) module, Allen-Bradley servo drives and motors, and actuators from Rockwell Automation Encompass(TM) partner companies.

As part of the Kinetix Integrated Motion solution, Kinetix 6000 servo drives feature a fiber optic SERCOS interface digital drive link between the drive and controller that replaces costly discrete wiring required with a traditional analog drive link. A single, digital, fiber optic link eliminates up to 18 discrete wires per axis and prevents phasing and electrical noise immunity issues often associated with discrete wiring. Advanced control capabilities within the drive provide greater precision and throughput, allowing customers to meet demands for increased productivity. Built-in smart motor technology provides automatic identification of specific motor configurations for integration with Kinetix 6000 drives, reducing commissioning time and safeguarding against incompatible motor replacement.

New approach to installation and wiring. Kinetix 6000 servo drives feature an innovative Power Rail mounting and wiring system for fast, uncomplicated design and installation. The Power Rail replaces traditional DC bus bars, DIN rails or fasteners, auxiliary power wires and inter-module cabling. It also reduces wiring and ensures proper drive grounding and connectivity. The modular design of the Power Rail supports between one and eight motion axes, depending on application needs, and requires only five bolts to mount up to eight servo modules, lowering installation time and costs.

Compact size. Kinetix 6000 features a shallow module depth to allow convenient placement in machinery. The 230 volt unit is just 185 mm deep and the 460 volt unit is just 260 mm deep, allowing drives to fit into standard 200 mm (8 inch) or 300 mm (12 inch) deep enclosures. The smaller module size, combined with other space-saving design features, result in drive enclosures that are up to 50 percent smaller than those required for competing 230 to 460 volt drives. This gives OEMs more design flexibility, allowing drive placement within or under machinery, reducing overall machine size.

Advanced control capabilities. For increased machine precision and throughput, Kinetix 6000 drives offer a velocity bandwidth greater than 400 Hz and a current-loop bandwidth greater than 1,300 Hz - double the performance of similar products. In addition, the ability to handle all global voltage requirements allows the Kinetix 6000 to effectively meet world-wide motion control needs.

Optional Line Interface Module (LIM) reduces cost and space. An optional LIM for the Kinetix 6000 replaces separate, complicated wiring and cables with a compact module, greatly reducing wiring costs and required space. In one easy-to-use module, the LIM provides circuit breakers, safety contactors, CE filters, 24-volt motor brake power, 24-volt DC input/output power, 220-volt AC auxiliary control power and all required connection wiring. This single module replaces nine separate components and eliminates up to 72 wire terminations.

Lower total cost of ownership. Kinetix 6000 drives are designed to significantly lower total machine costs, with savings extending beyond the drive. Cost reductions result from the compact size, reduced wiring and integration of motion control as well as the use of accessory modules to replace multiple components and complex wiring.

As an integral component of the Kinetix Integrated Motion architecture, the Kinetix 6000 servo drive embeds Rockwell Automation motion expertise into a high-performance, compact package for the most demanding applications.
