Lumeta Launches Vista Migration Service to Ease the Transition to Microsoft's Recently Released Operating System

Lumeta Service Mitigates the Risk of Implementing Security at the Operating System Level by Providing Global Network Visibility Throughout the Migration Process

SOMERSET, N.J., Feb. 21 / -- Lumeta, the leading provider of network assurance solutions for enterprises and government agencies, today announced a new service to assist federal agencies and commercial enterprises in planning a successful transition to the new Windows Vista operating system from Microsoft. Lumeta's Vista Migration Planning Service leverages the company's flagship network assurance solution, IPsonar®, to provide organizations with a detailed understanding of a network's infrastructure and application connectivity, which is the first requirement for effectively implementing new network security functionality native to Windows Vista.

Organizations that leverage the Lumeta service will reduce the time and cost associated with deploying new IPsec-based group security policy features in Windows Vista and more efficiently manage enterprise risk. Windows Vista and Windows Server Longhorn enable organizations to implement network security as a key component of the operating system by leveraging new security features and functionality, such as native IPsec-based group policy definition and management using Active Directory.

Additionally, Windows Vista and Windows Server Longhorn enable more efficient management and enforcement of security policies. Utilizing a technique known as Server and Domain Isolation (S&DI), the applications define groups of "trusted" computers and the rules for communicating with "untrusted" computers in the enterprise and beyond. In order to effectively define and enforce policies as part of an S&DI scenario, organizations must have a full view of the current network infrastructure and flow of connectivity across the enterprise.

Lumeta's Vista Migration Planning Service leverages IPsonar to provide this view by enabling an organization to baseline everything on the network and the flow of network traffic itself in order to address both the policy definition and network discovery requirements. IPsonar identifies a network's assets, interconnections and IP addressing, and validates assumptions throughout the network to provide complete visibility into baselining efforts. IPsonar allows organizations to develop a baseline of the network infrastructure and connectivity that can be used to define isolation policies and identify needed changes to the network infrastructure. By running IPsonar throughout the migration process, organizations can determine whether the implementation is progressing or regressing relative to initial requirements.

According to the Microsoft Solutions for Security and Compliance group(1), when planning a system migration "The very first step, even before beginning the design process, is to ensure that you have an up-to-date and accurate picture of the current state of your organization's network that includes workstation and server configurations as well as communication paths. It is not possible to develop an effective logical isolation solution without knowing exactly what the solution is expected to protect."

Without a complete understanding of the network, organizations will fail to properly define policy, resulting in unwanted connectivity to and from secure domains that introduce risk, or limited connectivity that fails to support business requirements. Furthermore, creating logical isolation carries a number of technical requirements for the network infrastructure that could necessitate upgrades or cause potential conflicts between operating system security features and network level defenses. Beginning a migration project without an accurate understanding of the network infrastructure will result in substantial time and cost overruns, while curtailing the security benefits of Windows Vista.

"Organizations simply can't even begin to start planning a Windows Vista migration project, or any network migration, without a clear, consistent and complete understanding of everything touching the network," said David Arbeitel, chief technology officer of Lumeta. "Our Windows Vista Migration Service helps organizations gather and maintain the most complete picture of a network's architecture and begin the process of migrating to Windows Vista. Without an accurate and thorough understanding of the network, a company will needlessly risk significant delays, cost overruns and potential business disruptions."

About Lumeta Corporation

Lumeta provides large enterprises and government agencies with the global visibility needed to quantify network risk and measure the impact of network change. Our network assurance solutions enable IT organizations to deploy new business services, maintain existing service levels and minimize network security risk to ensure compliant operations.

Lumeta's flagship product, IPsonar, is the industry's only solution that allows organizations to measure risk from a global network perspective. IPsonar maps every asset on a network -- including assets not currently under management -- visualizes the connectivity between assets and networks to uncover risk patterns and policy weaknesses, and enables network and security teams to bring unknown assets under management while deploying security technology more effectively to mitigate risk.
