Overview

Disaster recovery has just gotten easier and more affordable for pSeries® 670 and 690 servers used as disaster backup systems. The pSeries for Capacity BackUp (CBU) offering consists of an 8-way Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD) processor feature with all eight processors inactive. The processors are offered on pSeries 670 and 690 systems specifically configured for disaster recovery backup and remain inactive until you need them.

The 8-way CUoD processor features deliver durable 1.5 GHz POWER4+(TM) processors for p670 and 1.3 GHz POWER4(TM), 1.5 GHz POWER4+, and 1.7 GHz POWER4+ processors for p690. The p670 for CBU server must be configured as a 16-way system with four active processors, and the p690 for CBU server must be configured as a 32-way system with four active processors.

In the event of a disaster, the processors can be temporarily activated to meet processing requirements. Each 8-way CUoD processor feature includes 240 processor-days of temporary On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) activation. A p670 CBU system includes 240 individual processor-days, and the p690 CBU system includes 720 individual processor-days of on/off usage. You may activate and deactivate as many pairs of CUoD processors as you want until the total processing days have been reached. Additional On/Off CoD activations may be purchased if needed.

Additional enhancements: Entry-level p670 configurations with CUoD processors can now be order with a single multiple chip module (MCM) feature (#7400), enabling four processors to be active and four to remain in standby. Previously, the minimum configuration required eight active processors.

In another enhancement, p650, p670, and p690 servers now support CUoD activation (permanent, trial, and temporary On/Off CoD) when running Turbolinux Enterprise Server 8 or SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8. A partition reboot is required if adding CUoD resources (processors or memory) to a Linux partition. A system reboot is required if adding CUoD resources to a system running Linux as the only operating system in a single system image mode.

The previously announced Memory on Demand features for p650, p670, and p690 are now supported by AIX® 5.1 when the server is configured in a single system image.
