Sun Microsystems Outpaces the Market with New World Record-Breaking Servers and Workstation
Sun Adds Muscle, Longevity to Industry-Leading Server Portfolio With Nine New Sun Fire(TM) Servers and a Sun Ultra(TM) Workstation
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 15 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today further solidified its server leadership with the addition of 10 new products to its Sun Fire(TM) server and Sun Ultra(TM) workstation families that run the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), the most advanced operating system on the planet. With the broadest systems portfolio in the world and over 170 world-record performance marks, Sun raises the bar on the industry and steals share from competitors with new 1.8 GHz UltraSPARC(R) IV+ processor-powered servers and new x64 (x86, 64-bit) systems and workstations powered by the Next-Generation AMD Opteron(TM) processor family.
Having recently gained marketshare from competitors for server leadership, Sun continues to offer customers more choices to improve efficiency and lower cost in the datacenter. No other server company offers the depth and breadth of Sun's server portfolio, which consists of high- performance UltraSPARC processor-based servers, x64 systems and the breakthrough Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads(TM) technology. The new servers and workstation have generated wide support from a variety of Sun customers, including the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC), Broadcom, High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL), Mentor Graphics, Toshiba Solutions Corporation and the University of Michigan.

The new 1.8 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processor demonstrates Sun's ongoing commitment to the SPARC platform, powered by the Solaris 10 OS that offers customers the only "on-the-fly" upgrade path for quickly and easily taking advantage of the latest server technology. Giving customers up to an 8x performance increase over previous SPARC processor generations, improved I/O and expanded memory capabilities, these enhanced systems are ideal for enterprise applications, consolidation projects and migrations.
Available for purchase immediately, the new Sun Fire V490, V890, E2900, E4900, E6900, E20K and E25K servers are powered by new 1.8 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processors with double the memory capacity and improved I/O. Enabling the mixing and matching at various processor speeds, these systems can be tailored to a variety of workloads with no box swap required and enable customers to add faster processors as they become available, consolidate thousands of applications onto a single server via Solaris 10, replace old IBM Power 4 equipment with Sun Fire UltraSPARC IV+ based servers and avoid costly box swaps and upgrades for half the cost versus competing IBM systems. Sun today also introduced the best performing and most energy-efficient entry-level x64 servers, in addition to an x64 workstation with the industry's best price/performance.
Designed for high-performance computing (HPC), web-tier applications and visualization, the Sun Fire X2100 M2 server, Sun Fire X2200 M2 server and Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation deliver a combination of performance, energy efficiency and manageability that is unmatched by competitive x64 systems. The Sun Fire X2200 M2 server has up to twice the memory capacity and networking connectivity as other servers in its class, making it the perfect solution for compute-intensive simulation or modeling with large data sets. Data Centers Stay Up to Speed with Sun Refresh Service
Sun also announced today the Sun Refresh Service, which enables customers to always have the newest and fastest compute modules in the Sun Blade(TM) 8000 Modular System. Customers that subscribe to the service will get an automatic refresh of server modules equipped with the latest and fastest AMD Opteron processors as soon as they become available, gaining up to 40% or more performance on average annually, including upgrades to future generations of multi-core CPU technology or for future memory technology. The new Sun Fire Servers running the USIV+ processors are immediately available. Pricing begins at $40,995USD for the Sun Fire V490 server. The entry-level pricing for the Sun Fire X2100 M2 server and Sun Fire X2200 M2 server starts at $945USD and $1,595USD, respectively. Entry-level pricing for the Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation begins at $995USD. All three products are expected to ship this month.
