Wonderware Releases Industrial Application Server 2.0 Offering Unprecedented Scalability, Redundancy and Plant Information Security

Scales from 250 to 1 Million I/O Configurations, Provides "One-Click" Application Redundancy & Data/Information Security for Wide Range of Plant Applications

LAKE FOREST, Calif., Oct. 8, 2004 -- Wonderware, a business unit of Invensys Systems, Inc., today announced a significant new release of its Industrial Application Server software. Industrial Application Server 2.0, built on the ArchestrA software architecture, incorporates highly scalable distributed processing and cost-effective redundancy functions, affirming its ability to meet the requirements of even the most demanding automation and plant information applications.

Industrial Application Server 2.0 offers simple, low-cost redundancy with a click of a mouse, unmatched scalability from 250 to 1 million I/O points across up to 100 computer nodes, and a self-adjusting communications protocol for use with low-bandwidth networks. The Industrial Application Server is the core distributed applications processing element of Wonderware's popular FactorySuite A² integrated software suite. When used in conjunction with InTouch 9.0 visualization software, the IndustrialSQL Server historian and other integrated suite software, users benefit from an extremely powerful, secure and easy-to-use industrial application platform.

"Industrial and manufacturing companies today demand sustainable, highly integrated applications that can adapt to their stringent requirements for reliability, flexibility, scalability and cost effectiveness," said Steve Garbrecht, product marketing manager for Wonderware's Industrial Application Server. "Wonderware exceeds this expectation by delivering one of the broadest industrial applications software offerings while focusing on the lowest total cost of ownership. This makes engineers' lives even easier and more productive -- whether they have a discrete, continuous process or distributed SCADA automation application or a plant-wide integration/plant intelligence application. The ArchestrA architecture on which the Industrial Application Server was built was designed with scalability in mind."

High availability and redundancy in HMI and SCADA applications typically involves complicated scripting and testing to ensure a robust failover capability. Industrial Application Server 2.0 incorporates automatic switching from one node to another via a simple configuration checkbox in the ArchestrA Integrated Development Environment. In addition, systems can be configured so that one node fails over to a dedicated computer or two nodes back each other up. This system is easily implemented, highly available, and can reduce operational downtime while keeping application development costs in check.

In August 2004, Wonderware's FactorySuite A² products, including the Industrial Application Server, underwent three weeks of testing in a large systems setting of more than 500 computers at the Microsoft Partners Solution Center in Redmond, Wash. The validation and benchmarking tests covered the scalability, operation and administration of the technology.

Providing unprecedented scalability across the widest range of applications, Industrial Application Server 2.0 has been tested to 1 million I/O with support for 100 computer platforms and up to 400 Terminal Services sessions in a single system. In addition, its self-tuning communications and system management capabilities enable it to accommodate slow and intermittent networks as well as today's high-speed networks. The Industrial Application Server also offers powerful security, down to the individual data element level in order to protect automation systems from unwanted intruders. The scalability of this system also saves time and money for future expansion or additions.

Microsoft has been diligently working to better protect its users with the introduction of the Windows Server 2003 operating system and, more recently, Windows XP Service Pack 2. Not only have Wonderware Factory Suite A² products been tested on these new Microsoft releases, but they also go one step further to provide industrial-strength security down to the individual data element level.

"In today's marketplace, manufacturers demand solutions that allow them to reduce costs while maximizing existing investments," said Chris Colyer, global process industry manager, Manufacturing Industry Unit at Microsoft. "By building its solutions on Microsoft technology, Wonderware is providing its customers with the ability to leverage the systems they currently have in place while improving communication and collaboration."

The Industrial Application Server integrates with and adds value to customers' existing systems. It provides a platform that can be used in virtually any automation or IT environment, regardless of the existing network infrastructure. This extends the useful life of legacy plant automation systems, reducing the need for expensive capital investments. Industrial Application Server is now enabling engineers to achieve tremendous cost savings and efficiency with software that is developed once and then can be distributed locally or over a wide area network to any computer. Software-based redundancy meets the needs of most supervisory/SCADA and plant intelligence applications and offers a level of flexibility, ease of implementation and cost competitiveness over other solutions.
