IBM eServer p5 550 Enhances Offerings in the Entry Server Environment

Overview
The IBM eserver p5 550 Deskside and Rack-mount Server (9113-550)
gives you new tools for managing e-business, greater application
flexibility, and innovative technology - all designed to help you capitalize on the e-business revolution. With its two processor positions, the model 550 is available in 2- and
4-way configurations.

The symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) uses a 2-way, state-of-the-art, 64-bit, copper-based, POWER5(TM) microprocessor running at 1.65 GHz. The 2-way processor card has 36 MB L3 cache and 8 DIMM slots. The base 1 GB of main memory can be expanded to 64 GB for faster performance and exploitation of 64-bit addressing as used in large database applications.

The p5-550 contains up to 11 bays. There are four front-accessible, hot-swap-capable DASD bays in a minimum configuration with an additional four hot-swap-capable DASD bays optional. The eight DASD bays can accommodate up to 1174.4 GB of disk storage. Two of the remaining three bays are used for a DVD-ROM and a DVD-RAM, and the third bay can contain a tape drive.

Other integrated features include:
o Five hot-swap 3.3-V PCI-X slots or four hot-swap 3.3-V PCI-X slots and one slot to support the Dual Port RIO-2 I/O Hub
o Service Processor
o Two 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports
o Dual Ultra320 SCSI controllers (internal) with optional RAID
adapter
o Two serial ports and two USB ports
o Two HMC ports
o Two remote I/O (RIO-2) ports
o Hot-swap power and cooling
o Redundant cooling

Dynamic logical partitioning (LPAR), with micro-partitioning, and Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD) are supported on the p5-550.

The p5-550 is added to the hardware models supported with the pSeries® Cluster 1600 running Cluster Systems Management (CSM) for V1.4 (AIX® or Linux(TM)). For hardware control using CSM, an HMC is required.

Key prerequisites
If installing AIX on the system (one of these):
o AIX 5L for POWER(TM) V5.2 with the 5200-04 Recommended Maintenance Package (APAR IY56722), or later
o AIX 5L for POWER V5.3, or later

If installing Linux on the system (one of these):
o SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for POWER, or later
o Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS for POWER Version 3 (planned availability: September 30, 2004)

Planned availability dates
o August 31, 2004
o September 30, 2004, for feature number 6593
