Serial Interface Module suits various applications.

Press Release Summary:

POINT I/O(TM) family includes Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) Absolute Encoder Module (1734-SSI) and RS232 ASCII Serial Interface Module (1734-232ASC). Former converts SSI data stream from absolute positioning devices (APDs) into position data available on DeviceNet(TM), ControlNet(TM), EtherNet/IP, or PROFIBUS DP 12 MB network. Model 1734-232ASC single-channel, RS232 interface module offers speeds to 38,400 kbaud and can transmit 128 characters per field device.

Original Press Release:

New Serial Interface Modules Augment Allen-Bradley POINT I/O(TM) Family

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio, July 15, 2002 - Complete automation leader Rockwell Automation has added two serial interface modules to the Allen-Bradley POINT I/O(TM) family. The Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) Absolute Encoder Module (1734-SSI) and the RS232 ASCII Serial Interface Module (1734-232ASC) will allow industrial OEMs and end users to leverage the benefits of the POINT I/O platform - flexibility, reliability, low cost of ownership - in a wider range of applications.

Designed for pick-and-place, ramp-to-position, distance-gauging and similar applications, the 1734-SSI module converts a SSI data stream from absolute positioning devices (APDs) into position data available on either a DeviceNet(TM) ControlNet(TM), EtherNet/IP or PROFIBUS DP 12 MB network. SSI is an absolute positioning serial communication protocol residing on RS422 lines. APD developers, whose products include rotary displacement transducers (also known as absolute encoders), as well as linear and optical transducers, are rapidly adopting this protocol as a standard interface to automation systems.

"By adding SSI capability to POINT I/O, we are supporting an industry-wide effort to standardize the interface between APDs and control equipment," said Jim Iubelt, POINT I/O product manager, Rockwell Automation. "Today, there are more than 60 SSI-enabled devices from more than a dozen vendors that work with this new module."

Compatible with both gray code and binary code SSI protocols, the 1734-SSI can also convert gray code to binary code to facilitate controller data calculations. In addition, it provides configurable data sizes (from two to 31 bits), communication rates and delay times. Competitive solutions require different catalog numbers for each of these features. "The Allen-Bradley offering, however, packages multiple options in a single module. This helps users reduce engineering design costs and spare parts inventory," added Iubelt.

The 1734-232ASC module is a single-channel, RS232 interface. RS232 is a popular serial data protocol for intelligent devices using RS232 ASCII communication, such as bar code readers, label printers and Allen-Bradley data liners. Coupled with a network adapter, the POINT I/O module provides a cost-effective interface that connects these devices to DeviceNet today.

"This module is ideal for retrofit applications where a company installs a fieldbus to integrate factory-floor devices," Iubelt said. "Instead of replacing RS232 field devices with network-ready versions, POINT I/O delivers a convenient, economical interface to DeviceNet."

Along with change-of-state functionality, the 1734-232ASC offers speeds up to 38,400 Kbaud and is capable of transmitting 128 characters per field device - both industry-leading marks. These features give users more productivity and flexibility than what is currently available through similar products on the market.

The general POINT I/O solution consists of terminal bases, I/O modules and network adapters that are DIN rail-mounted and link together to meet the exact needs of an application. This I/O system is ideal for manufacturing, packaging, food processing, material handling and other industries where flexibility and low cost of ownership are key to successful control system design and operation.

Both the 1734-SSI and 1734-232ASC POINT I/O modules are shipping.
