Eight New High-Performance NI Serial Interfaces Deliver Flexible Baud Rates

NEWS RELEASE - June 1, 2004 - National Instruments today announced eight new RS-232/485 serial interfaces that deliver advanced features such as flexible baud rates up to 1 Mb/s and universal PCI, hyperthreading and multiprocessor support. The improved speed and flexibility of the new NI 843x family of serial boards, combined with the recently released LabVIEW 7.1 I/O Assistant, offer increased productivity for serial applications such as machine control, manufacturing test and traditional instrument control.

The NI 843x family of serial boards delivers flexible baud rate capabilities that engineers can use to communicate with devices that operate with non-standard baud rates ranging from 57 b/s to 1 Mb/s. The boards also work with devices such as cell phones that require communication using both standard and non-standard baud rates.

With multiprocessor and hyperthreading support, engineers also can take advantage of the latest PC technology for higher speeds and improved efficiency. The new driver software included with the boards offers better resource allocation and universal PCI support for 3.3 V and 5 V I/O, as well as DMA access for higher throughput with minimal CPU usage. In addition, the NI 843x family of serial boards includes new memory mapping features that engineers can use to connect to more serial devices without resource conflicts.

The NI 843x family of boards offers overall increased productivity and ease of use for serial programming, working with the recently released LabVIEW 7.1 Instrument I/O Assistant and the more than 3,000 instrument drivers available for download at www.ni.com/idnet. Engineers can use these combined resources to make programming using serial communications faster and more efficient, saving valuable time and resources.
