Ocean Optics Introduces World's Smallest Sequential Injection Analyzer

Compact "Lab-on-Valve" System Automates Virtually Any Wet-chemistry Lab Procedure

Dunedin, Fla., August 2003 -- Now available from Ocean Optics is the "Lab-on-Valve," a compact Sequential Injection Analyzer for all-in-one chemical analyses. The FIA-SIA-LOV Sequential Injection Analyzer combines a computer-controlled six-position valve, precision syringe pump, and spectrophotometric flow cell in a 12.7 cm x 15.3 cm x 15.3 cm package that can automate virtually any wet-chemistry lab procedure. Software controls procedures with simple commands to sequence through sample dilution, addition of reagents, and mixing and routing of the sample through the flow cell, for continuous or stopped-flow measurements.

The FIA-SIA-LOV unit was developed by flow injection system supplier FIAlab Instruments, and is compatible with Ocean Optics UV and Visible miniature fiber optic spectrometers, light sources and optical fibers for dynamic spectral analyses of optical absorbance or fluorescence of fluids. Complete systems can be configured for less than $20,000.

The FIA-SIA-LOV Sequential Injection Analyzer features FIAlab's Lab-on-Valve technology -- a fully integrated, six-position selector valve that enables flow injection, sequential injection and bead trapping with a single component. Because all the chemistry takes place within the valve manifold, the need for additional tubing and connectors is eliminated. The FIA-SIA-LOV also offers cost-effective, micro-liter methodology -- it produces less waste, saves money and introduces fewer chemicals into the environment. The unit weighs just 3.6 kg, making it both portable and easy to install in small incubators for temperature and humidity control. Also, the FIA-SIA-LOV easily can be positioned near ETAAS and MS systems so that micro-volumes of processed samples need not be transported through long conduits, which can cause degradation.

The FIA-SIA-LOV Sequential Injection Analyzer is used for applications such as analysis of dissolved constituents in water, biological samples and process streams, as well as more complex procedures that require separations, such as immunoassays. Also, nearly any standard colorimetric flow injection analysis method can be adapted to SIA, and performed on the unit with few or no modifications to the manifold. In fact, changing procedures is as easy as opening a stored script and switching reagent bottles. Creating new applications is made easier by using the sample scripts as a template, and then modifying the parameters to optimize performance.

The Lab-on-Valve technology featured in the FIA-SIA-LOV permits very high reproducibility of physical processes including injection, mixing and optical monitoring. Each of the Lab-on-Valve's ports is assigned a specific function, such as flow-through optical cell, sample aspiration, reagent aspiration, holding coil and waste elimination. The ports are interconnected by microchannels and a built-in multipurpose flow cell connects to optical fiber probes for spectral analyses in either absorbance or fluorescence mode.

The FIA-SIA-LOV Sequential Injection Analyzer also offers multi-channel, multi-assay flexibility -- up to 12 interconnected FIA-SIA-LOV systems, all controlled by a single computer and operated in multi-channel format. If needed, the components can be separated and run individually -- an advantage compared with many commercially available multi-channel FIA systems.

Each FIA-SIA-LOV contains a 5 VDC relay for powering LED lamps, as well as a 24 VDC relay for powering a heater, small auxiliary pump, or solenoid valve. A collection of tubing, connectors and other fluidics parts is included. Operating software is also included.

FIA-SIA-LOV systems are $13,450. Spectrometers and light sources are extra. Additional components and custom configurations are priced separately.
