Sequencer increases boiler system efficiency.

Press Release Summary:

MP2(TM) Sequencer, designed to maximize performance of Copper-Fin®, Copper-Fin II®, and Efficiency+® boiler lines, acts as automated control system that determines when to fire each boiler, in what order, and for how long. It provides up to 9 on/off stages based on outdoor temperature, set point requirement, or external input signal. Features include indoor/outdoor reset; Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) logic; and equal run-time rotation.

Lochinvar® Introduces Versatile MP2(TM) Sequencer

New sequencer increases system efficiency

LEBANON, Tenn. (August 11, 2004) - Lochinvar® Corp. introduces the versatile MP2(TM) Sequencer, specifically designed to maximize the performance of Lochinvar's high-efficiency Copper-Fin®, Copper-Fin II® and Efficiency+® boiler lines.

A "sequencer" is the automated control system that determines when to fire each boiler, in what order, and for how long. The precision and versatility of the MP2 sequencer ensures the utmost efficiency, consistency, and reliability in a heating system by providing up to nine on/off stages based on outdoor temperature, a set point requirement, or an external input signal.

The MP2 sequencer employs indoor/outdoor reset to determine the rate of heat loss in a building and adjusts the heat supply accordingly. This feature increases energy savings by providing heat only when needed, and it improves comfort by eliminating temperature swings.

To prevent system overshooting and droop, which is common in most sequencers, the MP2 utilizes Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) logic for boiler control. "Proportional" determines how low the temperature is below set point. "Integral" considers how long the temperature has been below set point. "Derivative" compares how fast the temperature is changing.

An additional feature of the MP2 is the boiler mass setting. Since mass determines the heating and cooling rate of a boiler, this number is critical in maximizing efficiency. By determining the thermal mass of the boiler, the MP2 sequencer is able to calculate the precise number of stages necessary to meet heating requirements. Reducing unnecessary staging not only improves energy efficiency but also minimizes wear and tear on the boilers.

Additionally, the MP2 protects boilers from excessive use with an equal run-time rotation, which ensures no one boiler in the system is called upon more often than the others. With its versatility, the MP2 allows for eight modes of operation:

Mode 1: 9 single-stage boilers and a primary pump

Mode 2: 4 single-stage boilers with individual pumps and a primary pump

Mode 3: 4 two-stage boilers and a primary pump

Mode 4: 3 two-stage boilers with individual pumps and a primary pump

Mode 5: 3 three-stage boilers and a primary pump

Mode 6: 2 three-stage boilers with individual pumps and a primary pump

Mode 7: 2 four-stage boilers and a primary pump

Mode 8: 1 four-stage boiler with pump and a primary pump

Other features of the MP2 Sequencer include night setback, warm weather shutdown, set point boiler reset override, and an isolated contact on the control that can be used as either a combustion air damper contact or an alarm contact.
