Sentillion Taps Amazon S3 from Amazon Web Services for Web-Based Distribution of Virtualized Computers

Amazon S3 Allows Customers of Sentillion's vThere Solution to Post Virtualized Computer Image Files for Rapid and Secure Downloading by End Users

ANDOVER, Mass., Oct. 30 -- Sentillion vBusiness, a division of Sentillion, Inc., today announced that it is leveraging the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) from Amazon Web Services (http://aws.amazon.com/) as a key element of its vThere.net virtualized desktop image distribution solution.

vThere is a packaged client-side virtualized desktop solution that provides remote corporate users with the same operating system and corporate application experience and performance as if they were physically in the enterprise. vThere enables enterprises to create contained, controlled and fully functional software environments, including an embedded VPN, within a virtualized desktop. These packaged environments, called vThere images, are generally hosted on un-managed computers such as a remote user's home computer or an employee-owned laptop, in order to create a self-contained, safe, and secure corporate computing environment that leverages the host hardware, but which is otherwise completely isolated from the host.

The vThere solution includes a secure hosted Web site (http://vthere.net/) that enterprises use to quickly and securely provision vThere images to remote users. This off-the-shelf solution greatly enhances the ability for businesses to deploy desktop virtualization technology to a large number of users, a problem that limits the use of other virtualization products. Sentillion selected Amazon S3 for vThere.net because it is the same proven data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of Web sites.

"The vision for Amazon Web Services is to allow businesses to focus on their ideas, not the nuts and bolts of scaling their Web businesses," said Steve Rabuchin, director of developer relations for Amazon Web Services. "Sentillion is the type of enterprise we envisioned when we were identifying the ideal customer for this offering. They are an innovative company that wants to not only bring their vThere product to market faster but they also want to provide their customers with the enterprise-class infrastructure that they demand and expect."

To access their vThere images, end users at a corporation will be directed to vThere.net to validate that they are entitled to access the vThere image, and if successful, the image will be downloaded automatically from Amazon. To the end user, the process will be seamless and appear as if the entire interaction transpired with Sentillion.

"Creating the storage infrastructure to support the large number of vThere images stored on vThere.net was going to take significant time and resources, so we looked at alternative approaches and found that the Amazon Web Services offering was the more cost-effective and expedient way to go," said Paul Roscoe, president, Sentillion vBusiness. "This partnership marries Sentillion's enterprise-class virtualization solution with Amazon's enterprise-grade infrastructure, enabling us to deliver the highest quality user experience."
