Averaging and Multi Spot Temperature Sensors Improve Accuracy of Liquid Hydrocarbon Inventory Tank Gauging

A new permanently installed sensor, designed to provide convenient and accurate temperature measurement of liquid hydrocarbons in tanks or other large storage vessels, has been introduced by Weed Instrument of Round Rock, Texas.

The ACCU-TEMP Type M Tank Measurement Sensor determines either average or multiple spot temperature. Lightweight and coiled for ease of installation, the sensor is built of flexible, corrosion-resistant stainless steel or Monel annular-ring hose. The sensor can be used in tanks as high as 200 ft (61m).

Designed for direct immersion in the product, the new sensor requires only one tank entry opening. Various tank entry connections and terminal enclosures are available.

Precise temperature measurement is crucial for high accuracy monitoring of liquid hydrocarbons contained in bulk storage tanks. Any fluctuation in temperature between two static measurements will directly result in a deviation of measured volume, resulting in incorrect tank contents measurement. To compensate for this, high accuracy temperature measurement must be performed to derive standard volumes.

A Variable Length Averaging RTD version of the ACCU-TEMP Type M is available, consisting of a number of temperature sensing elements of different lengths, with all the elements temperature-sensitive over their entire lengths and extending from the bottom of the tank. The average temperature is determined by selecting the longest fully submerged element and connecting it to the temperature circuit. Up to 12 elements can be installed; they may be either 100-ohm copper or 100-ohm DIN platinum-characterized copper.

The Multiple Spot Averaging RTD version of the ACCU-TEMP Type M consists of a number of PT 100 spot sensing elements, installed at approximately 10 ft (3m) intervals, with the lowest sensing element approximately 3 ft (0.9m) from the tank bottom. The temperature measuring circuit averages only the submerged elements; alternatively, the spot elements can be used to read individual points of temperature measurement to provide a tank temperature profile. The spot elements can be either 100 W copper or 100 W DIN platinum-characterized copper.
