Sensors have ASCII communications protocol.

Press Release Summary:

ServoSensor S Series provides closed-loop position performance with better than 1 msec loop times and resolutions less than 0.001 in. Sensors store closed-loop gains and operational parameters, and offer interface to Allen Bradley ControlLogix or Automation Direct 205 PLC platforms using RS View or Visual Basic programming. They allow for multiple axis control of up to 26 axes per communication port, and have stroke lengths up to 132 in.

MTS Sensors' Temposonics(R) ServoSensor(TM) ASCII Protocol Improves Connectivity With Host Controllers

CARY, NC (March 12, 2002) - MTS Sensors Division extends the application range of its S Series ServoSensor product with a new ASCII communications protocol and enhanced Windows interface software. This high performance sensor with an embedded high-speed loop position controller in the same standard sensor envelope eliminates the need for costly servoamplifiers and complex PLC setups. The ServoSensor's design enables system integrators to trim cabinet panel space, reduce mounting hardware and operate both sensor and servovalve drive signal with a single 24Vdc power supply.

"The ServoSensor handles position and error information efficiently by utilizing the Temposonics sensing algorithms directly inside the sensor," said David Edeal, Temposonics Marketing Manager. "This makes for noise free position and speed signals, which is critical for high performance servoloops. The result is closed-loop position performance with better than 1 millisecond loop times and resolutions less than 0.001 inches. As a result, the sensors are suitable for applications that require high accuracy and fast response."

ServoSensors store closed-loop gains and operational parameters and offers control engineers an enhanced interface to Allen Bradley ControlLogix or Automation Direct 205 PLC platforms using RS View or Visual Basic programming. In addition, the new ASCII ServoSensor is approved for use with the Allen Bradley MVI (Multi-Vendor Interface) card. With the AB MVI, no external RS-485 converter is required since there are two RS-485 COM ports capable of 115 kBd each.

Key features of the new ServoSensor are the high degree of flexibility in its internal configuration and in its external interface. The ServoSensor allows for multiple axis control of up to 26 axes per communication port. Built in functionality can now be accessed directly using predetermined PLC code. These capabilities include status monitoring, controller tuning and a highly flexible command code including target, velocity and jog functions.

The ServoSensor is available in both rod style (Model SH) and profile style (Model SP) application housings, offering modular construction, flexible mounting configurations and easy installation, now with stroke lengths up to 132" standard.

The Temposonics Model SH rod style sensors are designed for internal mounting in applications where high-pressure conditions exist (5,000 psi continuous/ 10,000 psi spike) such as hydraulic cylinders. Mounted externally, the Model SH sensors offer users the ability to replace the electronic head and sensor cartridge in the field quickly and easily.

The Temposonics Model SP profile style sensors offer two different magnet-mounting configurations: captive sliding magnet or floating magnet. SP Series sensors are designed for space-restrictive applications and environments where there are high levels of dust and contamination. In addition, SP sensors can be externally mounted on machines and configured with a variety of connector options.
