RAE Systems Announces Total Connectivity Solution for Wireless Industrial Monitoring

AreaPORT and AreaConnect provide seamless, wireless online monitoring of 4-20 mA sensors and Industrial Ethernet data management for manufacturing environments

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - October 14, 2003 -RAE Systems Inc. (AMEX: RAE), a leading provider of hazardous environment detection solutions for industry and homeland defense, today announced the launch of a total connectivity monitoring solution for industrial environments. Manufacturing environments such as refineries, power plants, paper/pulp processing, and process industries rely on sensor data to run at optimal efficiency. The solution consists of the AreaPORT, a wireless, remote online monitoring product designed to provide better visibility into the multiple data streams generated by a variety of 4-20mA sensors and monitors in manufacturing environments; and AreaConnect, an Industrial Ethernet-enabled data management platform. Both are extensions of RAE Systems AreaRAE family of wireless network and gas detection systems.

AreaConnect gives industrial hygienists and industrial plant managers the ability to aggregate the data generated from wireless AreaPORT-enabled 4-20mA sensors and then integrate that data, regardless of different network IDs. The AreaConnect is based on Industrial Ethernet, which has built-in redundancy and durability so that all devices remain connected despite the harsh conditions often found in a factory environment. While there are numerous types of industrial bus networks available, Industrial Ethernet represents a higher level architecture that alleviates the cumbersome bus-to-bus interfaces frequently found in industrial sensor/actuator implementations.

The AreaPORT accepts data from up to four channels from standard monitoring devices with 4-20 mA analog inputs. It delivers the sensor information via wireless communications to a central host controller, up to two miles away, running the ProRAE Remote Host Controller software package, providing real time sensor data and alarm states in a comprehensive dashboard view. The AreaPORT is small and portable, measuring 12 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches, weighs less than 17 pounds, and has a rugged NEMA 4-rated cover, making it ideal for integrating sensor and alarm data from pressure transducers, smokestack sensors, and velocity, viscosity and density sensors in pipes.

"This solution expands RAE Systems' hazardous gas monitoring, radiation detection and sensing capabilities, and extends our leadership in industrial automation, and process control management," said Robert Chen, CEO of RAE Systems. "This next-generation wireless sensing solution provides plant managers the ability to sense, collect and interpret data, which in turn makes processes run better and ultimately improves manufacturing efficiency."

RAE Systems is demonstrating their wireless industrial monitoring solutions at The Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society (ISA) Conference and Expo at the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas on October 21-23, 2003. Four-to-twenty Milliamp (4-20 mA). A commonly-used analog control signal which varies in electrical current (measured in milliamperes) between 4 and 20 milliamps. Ordinarily, four represents the lowest value, for instance zero flow, and twenty represents the maximum, for instance, 300 gallons per minute (in a two-inch pipe).
