MRV 7204 Sensor Manager Expands Out-of-Band Management to Include Remote Facility Monitoring and Control

Four-Slot, High-Density System Can Manage Up to 512 Sensors From a Single IP Address

CHATSWORTH, Calif., May 16 -- MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ:MRVC), a leading provider of products and services for out-of-band networking, WDM and optical transport, metro Ethernet, fiber optic components, 10GE and other service aware networking products, today announced the MRV 7204 Sensor Manager. The 7204 further expands MRV's LX Series Out-of-Band Networking solution, designed to extend classic out-of-band management techniques to integrate the management of environmental and physical events into an overall IT management system.

The MRV 7204 Sensor Manager is optimized for remote, unstaffed facilities that need lights-out management (LOM) that can alert technical staff to everything from a door opening, to power outages, to fuel levels in a back-up power generator. MRV's 7204 Sensor Manager is targeted at carriers, utilities and enterprise applications.

"By integrating the benefits of sensor networking with out-of-band management, we've given customers a secure way to centralize monitoring and control of the physical and environmental activities that are increasingly important to the performance and security of their IT and network systems," said Mary Jane Gruninger, general manager of MRV's Out-of-Band Networking division.

The MRV 7204 is a four-slot, 1U-high chassis that can be populated with a combination of sensor input and control output modules. With the 32-port contact sensor module, the system can support up to 128 wet or dry sensors per chassis. An 8-port analog loop module provides flexibility to attach specialized sensors that measure analog inputs like gas or fluid levels, heat or humidity. An 8-port control output module allows a remote system manager to control connected systems, such as air conditioning or back-up generators, either manually or automatically in response to an alarm triggered by a sensor input.

The 7204 Sensor Manager is managed through an attached MRV LX Series Secure Console Server connected with a RS-232 serial interface. With a capacity of 128 contacts per 7204, a distributed architecture allows the LX Series Console Server, working with four 7204 Sensor Managers, to manage up to 512 alarm points using a single IP address. The LX Series Secure Console Server can also provide remote service port access and remote power management of other network elements.

Used with MRV's LX Series console server family, the 7204 leverages the benefits of this state-of-the-art Out-of-Band Networking solution. The LX Series family console servers provide secure out-of-band device configuration and management capabilities. To maximize uptime, LX models are available with dual Ethernet connections and dual power supplies for redundancy. For data security, the console servers support the FIPS-140-2 cryptographic standard and a full range of security features and protocols, including per-port passwords, SSH v2.0, SNMP V3, RADIUS, SecurID, TACACS+, PPP PAP/CHAP, PPP dial back, built-in database and user access lists.

The MRV 7204 can be configured and managed by an easy to use browser based GUI, a powerful Command Line Interface (CLI), or MRV's MegaVision SNMP-based management software. MegaVision also provides fault management system capabilities that provide administrators with the tools they need to quickly identify, manage, prioritize and resolve sensor events and fault conditions. MegaVision may also be used in combination with other SNMP based systems.

The MRV 7204 Sensor Manager is currently available from MRV and its resellers worldwide. U.S. list pricing starts at $2,690. More information is available at www.mrv.com.
