Foundry Networks' SecureIron Perimeter Traffic Manager Optimizes WAN Utilization and Enhances Perimeter Defense
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 29 / / -- Foundry Networks(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced the new SecureIron(TM) Perimeter Traffic Manager (PTM) devices to augment perimeter security and optimize application performance across multiple Wide Area Network (WAN) links. The SecureIron PTM augments and offloads traditional firewall security at the perimeter to protect the investment and extend the life of the firewalls. With ISP link aggregation and highly intelligent bandwidth management, the SecureIron PTM maximizes utilization of Internet capacity and provides Quality-of-Service (QoS) and prioritization to critical enterprise application traffic. Foundry Networks' modular hardware-based architecture ensures that the solution scales to meet the growing perimeter traffic demands of the customer as more critical services are remotely managed and used.
The SecureIron PTM is designed to be deployed as a front-end to existing traditional firewalls at the network perimeter for unmatched hardware-based protection against Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks and application level threats. The devices can offload overburdened firewalls from key security features like Access Control Lists (ACL), DoS/DDoS, stateful Network Address Translation (NAT) and application rate controls to maximize the firewall performance for stateful inspection. The SecureIron solution enhances perimeter security by offloading and augmenting traditional firewalls for a fraction of the cost of PC-based security appliances or costly firewall upgrades, while scaling up to multiple Gigabits per second (Gbps) traffic management and security throughput. Additionally, the SecureIron PTM provides SPAM mitigation and Web filtering to enhance protection at the perimeter, which optimizes internal resource usage for legitimate traffic.

The SecureIron PTM family offers a choice of three performance models, including a new ultra-high-performance model based on Foundry's new-generation security processor technology that offers performance scalability up to 6Gbps of Layer 4 traffic management throughput and 1Gbps of Layer 7 application QoS and security protection. The family features switches in two form factors -- a new compact 2RU high three-slot modular switch and a more expandable four-slot 5RU chassis with fully front-serviceable power supplies. Module interchangeability between the two chassis provides a migration path for customers to higher capacity or compact size with full investment protection.

SecureIron PTM solution integrates firewall clustering and ISP link aggregation functions to provide virtually unlimited Internet bandwidth and firewall scalability. These features also dramatically increase the Internet and firewall security uptime. The firewall clustering solution allows users to scale the capacity of their traditional systems incrementally and maintain high-availability at the most critical points in the network. ISP link aggregation intelligently distributes traffic over multiple IP links, eliminating the need for complex Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing designs and allows organizations to configure bandwidth commitments for specific critical IP applications. Multiple parameters, including network health, round trip response time, ISP link cost and bandwidth utilization are used to control and optimize traffic distribution across multiple WAN connections.
