Digital Physicians Network Introduces Clinical Terminology Search Tool for Surgeons; Service Matches Surgical Terms and Billing Codes

PROVIDENCE, R.I., March 29 / -- Digital Physicians Network today introduced a new online search tool for surgical practices. Surgeons enter clinical terms, colloquialisms, or abbreviations such as "lap chole" (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) or "ORIF fx femur" (open reduction internal fixation fractured femur) and instantly find applicable CPT(R) codes needed for billing. The search engine also contains commonly used eponyms; for example, entry of the term Whipple returns appropriate procedure codes.

"Our new clinical search tool helps surgeons bridge the gap between surgical terminology, which they use in their charts, and the numerical CPT(R) codes needed for billing," said Greg Brownell, chief executive officer of Digital Physicians Network.

The new program also aggregates the local Medicare Physician fee schedule, federal CCI (Correct Coding Initiative) edits to reduce "unbundling" claim disputes, and CPT(R) coding guidelines, all within the search results window.

The new program is part of DPN's suite of professional coding and charge capture tools. DPN's tools integrate comprehensive CPT(R) and ICD-9 search tools and guidelines to accompany their remote charge capture platform. The tools enable users to find codes based on an index, table of contents, procedure terms or code number.

The suite includes Boolean search engines to find appropriate ICD-9 and CPT(R) codes, and E/M Auditor reports for easy compliance verification. E/M Auditor's expert system guides the office manager or compliance officer to the proper level of E/M service. E/M Auditor makes it easy to instantly check the Medicare Fee Schedule, CCI Edits, and coding guidelines. The audit reports can be archived, printed or forwarded to hospitals and clinics.

The entire DPN suite, including surgical clinical terminology code search and the E/M Auditor expert system is now being offered on an introductory basis for $199.95 per year. The service works with all major internet services, integrates HCFA '95 and '97 documentation guidelines for E/M, CPT(R) coding guidelines, Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, CCI Edits, and is fully HIPAA compliant.

DPN's coding resources are now being used by more than 120 physician offices in 35 states. Based in Providence, RI DPN created the Paladin desktop coding system in 1998 and launched the Digital Physician Network internet service in November 2005.
