SCR - What Is Selective Catalytic Reduction?

SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is a technology that uses a urea based diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and a catalytic converter to significantly reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. SCR is the leading technology being used to meet 2010 emission regulations. SCR Technology will be in used in most new heavy duty commercial vehicles beginning in 2010.

This new technology (at least for the USA) is an efficient way of converting harmful diesel emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. Selective Catalytic Reduction also improves overall fuel economy by approximately 5%. And just an FYI. This is technology is not just a prototype in development that we might see in the market.

SCR and DEF are both coming to the forefront in 2010 in order to meet with federal regulations. Service stations and equipment suppliers are already preparing the infrastructure to be able to supply DEF to consumers that have these newly equipped vehicles. In other words, DEF will be available pretty much anywhere that diesel fuel is available.

DEF - What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is one of the key elements of the SCR process. It is a non toxic solution of 67.5% water and 32.5% urea. When injected into hot exhaust as a fine mist and passed over a catalyst, DEF helps convert NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor. DEF is not a fuel additive. It will require it's own separate tank on the vehicle. DEF consumption is expected to be about 2% of actual fuel consumption.

Preparations are already being made to produce, store, distribute and dispense DEF. Diesel Exhaust Fluid is not very corrosive, but it does attack copper and brass as well as some other metals. HDPE is fully compatible and will be used for storage of the liquid.

The liquid level gauges manufactured by my company, Krueger Sentry Gauge, already have all the options necessary to be fully compatible as a DEF Level Gauge. I do not recommend our standard construction, but we have three material configurations that will work great.

DEF Tank Level Gauge -

o SSR Construction - This level gauge has a HDPE Float, aluminum bushing (not wetted) and Stainless Steel wetted rods. All of these materials get excellent compatibility ratings.

o AllSS Construction - This diesel exhaust fluid level gauge is also available in ALL Stainless format. This upgraded version includes stainless floats, stainless rods, and a stainless bushing.

o All Plastic Construction - Our all plastic DEF tank gauge is the most expensive option. It has an HDPE Float, Peek Plastic Rods, and a PVC bushing.

DEF Overfill Alert Prevention Gauge -

o The overfill alert gauge for diesel exhaust fluid has the same material options as the above product.
