Sharpened for Market Success: Recent Scissor Development at Upright Offers Rental Market Much-Needed Differentiation

Current advances in scissor lift design may not be as radical as they were in the mid 90s. But manufacturers in tune with the market are turning to finer details to differentiate machines for a more sophisticated access user and emerging niches in the rental market.

At ARA 2003, UpRight will be demonstrating the differences it has been making to scissor design over the past 18 months - including the brand new X26 Ultra-N 32 ft. (10m) working height scissor.

Slimmer, higher - the innovative UpRight X26 Ultra-N
The most noticeable new trend in the scissor market is for greater height from a more compact chassis base. The need to be able to pass through a standard single door or along an aisle as narrow as 3 ft. (0.9m) is a demand increasingly made on an electric slab scissor. At just 32.5 in. (82.5cm) wide, UpRight's newest innovation, the X26 Ultra-N (launched Feb 2002), will pass through sub 3 ft. single wide doorways, and also provides a driveable maximum work height of 32 ft. (10m).

With all the compact capabilities of a 20 ft. (6m) platform height scissor, the X26 Ultra-N provides overlap between the 20ft/26ft (6-8m) sectors for greater utilisation and rental earnings. Tom Stachurski, UpRight VP Sales & Marketing, comments: "Although impressed with the X26 Ultra-N's capabilities on its launch 12 months ago, many rental companies were reticent to invest in what they saw as a very specialist scissor. However, a large order from a major U.S. national followed quickly, giving a signal to the market that the X26 Ultra-N is set to be a high utilization machine that will reap rewards from the fast evolving 20ft/26ft cross-over sector."

Such very high, ultra narrow units need to be comparatively heavier in order to meet increasingly stringent stability criteria. This often leads to machines with very poor and often impractical gradeability. The X26 Ultra-N uses an all-new combination of high powered wheel motors with integral multi-disc brakes, plus a superb new traction control system, to maintain full dual-wheel drive at all times. This new drive train has been so successful in tests for performance, endurance and reliability that UpRight is busy installing it on all its electric slab scissor lifts. On the X26 Ultra-N it gives a very useful 26% gradeability, more than enough for truck-loading ramps or on slopes in factories. Another great advantage of the X26 Ultra-N for the rental company is the ability to fit more units on a delivery truck. And they take up considerably less space in the stockyard, always an advantage, especially during winter.

Other X26 Ultra-N features & benefits:

o An 8 ft. 8.5 in. (2.35m) long chassis and tight 8 in. (203mm) inside turning radius add to machine maneuverability
o Extra traction drive from dual front wheel hydraulic motors boosts gradeability to a very useful 26%.
o Productivity is enhanced by the ability to drive the platform at its fully elevated platform height of 26 ft. (7.93m)
o Platform capacity is 500 lbs. (227kg ANSI model: 340kg for CE model), sufficient for 2 workers with tools and equipment.
o The X26 Ultra-N has quick retract guardrails, non-marking tires, fork truck pockets for easy loading and has full parts commonality with the X-Series product line.
o Inside platform dimensions are 10 ft. 6 in. (3.2m) by 28 in. (0.71m) with the roll-out deck extended (using a convenient foot pedal release).
o Machine weight is 5200 lbs (2358kg).

Shorter chassis - the class-leading MX19 micro-scissor

In addition to compact overall widths, demand is increasing in the 26 ft. (8m) work height sector for units that are as short as possible for enhanced manoeuvrability and more scope to fit into standard passenger elevators. The recently enhanced MX19 (25 ft./7.8m w/h), by far and away the industry's preferred and best selling micro-scissor, still fits more elevators than rivals thanks to its compact 68.75 in. (1.75m) length. At 29.75 in. (75cm) wide, it is also narrower than most, allowing it to easily pass through single width doors, even ones fitted with decorative architrave. Other recent changes (Summer 2002) to the MX19 include new wheels and a new battery charger that can be used worldwide.

UpRight' s new drive train has boosted the MX19's from 25% to almost 30%.
