SCHURTER Showcases New Circuit Protection Devices for Battery Applications at Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Tech Expo

Santa Rosa, California, August 28, 2018 - SCHURTER, an innovative and progressive manufacturer of circuit protection for the Automotive industry will feature its newest thermal protection devices at the Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo, which takes place September 11th through 13th in Novi, Michigan.

The first of its kind reflowable thermal device, RTS, protects power semiconductors against thermal runaway, with an opening time of exactly 210°C. Due to their inherent self-reinforcing heat-producing behavior, power semiconductors such as MOSFETs, ICs, IGBTs, TRIACs, SCRs, etc. can overheat and lead to thermal runaway. The RTS is designed to protect against such overheating, reliably interrupting the circuit precisely at a pre-defined temperature.

The RTS can be mounted using conventional reflow soldering techniques with temperature profiles up to 260 °C. After the solder process, the RTS is mechanically activated by depressing the top into place, arming the RTS to trip at 210 °C. It can be performed manually or automatically in the case of several devices being activated at once. In contrast to devices using electrical activation, with an additional contact, the status of the RTS is clearly and immediately visible to the installer. The need for an additional contact is also eliminated.

The RTS sustains operating currents up to 100 A at rated voltages of up to 60 VDC in a remarkable compact package measuring 6.6 x 8.8 mm in size. Customer-specific versions are available. Added features include integrated shunt or overcurrent protection, resulting in less space consumed on the printed circuit board.

Also on display will be SCHURTER’s USN 1206 chip fuse. The USN 1206 is not a pure thermal fuse, per se. It requires a current flow to blow, thus providing protection against overcurrent, just as well as any conventional fuse. Designed also to protect power semiconductors in automotive applications against over-temperature, the fuse has a current-time characteristic which shifts as a function of the ambient temperature. As a result, a specific trigger at a certain threshold value can be achieved with increasing temperature.

The 12 A current rated USN 1206 has high I2t values at 32 VDC and a slow blowing characteristic. It has a breaking capacity of 80 A at 32 VDC and 170 A at 16 VDC with an operating temperature range of a -40 degrees C to a +125 degrees C. The temperature-sensitive SMD fuse is reflowable at 245°C according to IEC 60068-2-58.

Both components are tested to AEC-Q200 standards and qualified according to ISO/TS16949 processes. SCHURTER’s SMD overcurrent and overtemperature devices for battery and electrical power systems in the automotive industry are precisely accurate, reliable, and resistant to vibration.
