Schuler Supplies New Servo Press to Feintool Group

Canton, Mich. - With the use of Schuler's 12-station, customized Servo Press, the Feintool Group has extended its drivetrain capabilities for future automotive advancements. To support the world's market leader in fineblanking technology, Schuler's advanced servo press line delivers the highest levels of reliability, flexibility and output while ensuring part accuracy, superior quality and metalforming excellence.

The 1600-ton press system with a six meter bed (or 18 feet) supports Feintool's Nashville, Tenn. facility and its current 2,000-ton press, making it one of the most advanced facilities of fineblanking forming systems in North America. Combined with Schuler's advanced ServoDirect Technology, the press will complement the company's existing equipment and is specifically designed for three-dimensional and intricately formed transmission and powertrain components.

"Increasing regulations and pressure on the automotive industry to reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions continues to drive companies to seek new and innovative ways to develop the next generation of powertrains," said Tim McCaughey, president and CEO of Schuler Incorporated. "Schuler's customized ServoDirect Technology press is a North American first, and is helping Feintool expand its fineblanking and forming capacity with the most state-of-the-art equipment to meet the industry's needs. Our press system and advanced technology enables precision forming and high flexibility for the most complex part geometries."

Feintool's automotive products such as modern disc carriers, pistons and drive plates are formed, rolled and trimmed in a single run within the press, allowing for high output and increased productivity. The system's three-axis transfer system and complex tooling stations also provide in-tool rolling of tooth geometries to ensure precision forming and accuracy of Feintool's transmission components. The slide movement of the servo press can be adapted to each part made, according to the necessary forming process, making production more efficient than ever.

As more North American manufacturing companies look to ServoDirect Technology as a means to produce components more efficiently, they are investigating new ways to also take advantage of the ability to produce value-added components using enhanced in-die processes in the press - such as heat treating for forming thick sheet metal or to replace secondary processes such as welding, thread tapping and laser cutting or engraving.
