Overview
The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) - single provides an independent UPS for one engine of an IBM TotalStorage® SAN Volume Controller cluster. For some SAN Volume Controller configurations, use of this feature may result in a lower configuration price as compared to use of the previously announced UPS feature, number 8100.

Key prerequisites
The SAN Volume Controller supports connectivity with Intel(TM)-based servers running Microsoft(TM) Windows NT(TM), Windows(TM) 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2003 Advanced Server, Linux(TM) Red Hat Advanced Server, SUSE Linux SLES 8, Novell NetWare, VMware ESX, and with RISC-based servers running AIX®, HP-UX, or Sun Solaris operating systems. Many of these servers require the Subsystem Device Driver (SDD) multipathing driver. Storage controllers from IBM and select disk arrays from other manufacturers are supported. The full interoperability matrix for SAN Volume Controller solution is available at www.ibm.com/storage/support/2145

The IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller Storage Software V2, or later, must be ordered separately. For additional details, refer to Software Announcement 205-031 , dated February 15, 2005.

Planned availability date
May 13, 2005

Description
The IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller is a storage virtualization solution that incorporates highly specialized software, control engines (SVC Storage Engines) installed in pairs, a master console, and UPSs. The SAN Volume Controller hardware configuration consists of a cluster of IBM 2145 Model 4F2 servers, called SVC Storage Engines. Each SVC Storage Engine is a node; two nodes make up a node pair (I/O Group), and up to four I/O Groups constitute a SAN Volume Controller cluster. The cluster is scalable from one to four node pairs (I/O Groups), and supported by dual read/write cache. This design is intended to help avoid single points of failure, and support concurrent maintenance.
