Xiotech Announces New Magnitude 3D 4000 SAN System Designed for Virtual and Consolidated Server Environments

Intelligent Provisioning, Integrated Server/Storage Management and Full Spectrum Data Protection Help Optimize Storage

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Oct. 15 -- Xiotech(R) Corporation today announced its new Magnitude 3D(R) 4000 line of storage systems, which provides sophisticated management, provisioning and data protection capabilities to complement today's consolidated and virtualized server environments.

Magnitude 3D 4000 systems feature advanced, yet easy-to-use, management with both storage-centric and server-centric views; storage provisioning that maximizes utilization without the risk of over-subscribing; simplified integration and customization; and Xiotech's comprehensive Full Spectrum Data Protection program.

"Server virtualization creates valuable opportunities for organizations. It also requires a new kind of storage infrastructure to manage increased capacity, change, performance and reliability requirements," said Michael Hoch, vice president, Marketing, Xiotech. "Magnitude 3D 4000 addresses these needs in a manner that's powerful and uncomplicated."

The new Magnitude 3D 4000 system expands upon the virtualized distributed cluster architecture of its predecessor, Magnitude 3D 3000, while also building on Xiotech's legacy for ease of use, reliability and adaptability with several new features:

ICON Manager:

ICON Manager is the first interface to offer the option of a traditional storage-centric management view and a unique server-centric view of storage-working with Windows volumes, rather than virtual disks. Users can view and manage storage from the perspective of an application and Windows server administrator. ICON Manager consolidates and simplifies storage provisioning and management tasks, performing virtual disk creation and volume assignment from a single menu. This eliminates the requirement to interface with both array management and server management interfaces.

"Our IT department is small, so we don't have much time to spend managing storage," said Carrie Duckett, IT coordinator for the City of Shakopee. "We've always been impressed with how easy Xiotech's systems are to deploy, provision and manage, but ICON Manager takes ease of use to an entirely new level. With the server administrator view, everyone in the IT department can effectively manage storage, giving all of us the time we need to focus on our real jobs. And our efficiency will improve even more when we move to a virtual server infrastructure."

"ICON Manager is everything I've come to expect from Xiotech -- great design, state of the art functionality and rock-solid reliability," said Keith Early, information systems analyst, San Joaquin County. "The interface is lightning-fast and amazingly easy to use. In fact, I showed it to a few of my colleagues who had never worked with SAN-based storage and within minutes they were managing storage for multiple servers."

ICON Services

Xiotech's ICON Services exposes a Web service based on industry standards (XML, SOAP, WSDL) for integration, automation and customized reporting. This helps Xiotech bring advanced capabilities to market faster and more efficiently. Additionally, Xiotech supports development and collaboration among partners and customers with the release of the ICON Services SDK, and through the Xiotech-hosted ICON Services Developer Forum.

Intelligent Provisioning

The new Intelligent Provisioning feature of the Magnitude 3D 4000 system provides a solution that maximizes storage utilization, eliminates the risk of over-subscription and only needs to be provisioned once. The system senses and automatically grows volumes as needed within the bounds of the system's actual capacity and capabilities, thereby eliminating stranded storage and avoiding over-subscription. In contrast, other technologies such as thin provisioning often promise more capacity to applications or storage volumes than available, resulting in over-subscription and potential data loss.

"Intelligent Provisioning saves us hours of capacity management every month," added Duckett. "We used to poll our servers bi-weekly to ensure they didn't run out of capacity. We then would have to manually add more disk and expand the servers' storage volumes. While this may have taken about an hour a day, all that time adds up and takes us away from other important tasks. Intelligent Provisioning completely eliminates this hassle by assigning storage to our servers as needed-ensuring we use capacity as efficiently as possible without the risk of over-allocation. We set the parameters once and are done."

Full Spectrum Data Protection

The move to a virtual server environment creates new paradigms for data availability and data protection. To meet these needs, Xiotech introduced a new Full Spectrum Data Protection program with the Magnitude 3D 4000 system. The program helps organizations streamline disaster recovery, reduce backup windows and improve data availability with a more comprehensive approach to data protection requirements.

Many solutions minimize and oversimplify business continuity, offering a single data protection offering. Full Spectrum Data Protection takes a more holistic approach by assessing data protection needs in the context of data preservation, data availability, logical threats and physical threats. These needs are then mapped to appropriate solution offerings, such as continuous data protection (CDP), off-site hosting services, asynchronous replication or tape, to be used singularly or in combination to achieve each organization's specific objectives in an integrated and cost-effective fashion.

"Organizations do not always give data protection as high a priority and as much attention as they might," said Mark Peters, analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "Of course, although it is their data that they're protecting, that data in reality represents their business. Although all data is not created equal, and will typically be tiered in terms of active storage service levels, the temptation can be to adopt a 'peanut butter' approach to data protection. However, for efficiency, economy and effectiveness, it does not make sense to treat all data equally when it comes to protecting it. Rather, there should be graded levels of data protection, in relation to any specific data's relevance to save, restore, and run the business. This will translate to a range of immediacy, necessity and extent."

Magnitude 3D 4000 Product Models

The three Magnitude 3D 4000 models enable users to select the system that provides them with the specific capacity, availability and performance their business requires:

-- Magnitude 3D 4000s: Dual-controller high-capacity system, providing users with up to 168 terabytes of capacity, 248 server connections and 2GB of battery-protected memory.
-- Magnitude 3D 4000e: Dual-controller midrange system that provides users with up to 84 terabytes of storage, 124 server connections and 512 megabytes of battery-protected memory.
-- Magnitude 3D 4000e Edge: Entry-level system that provides users with up to 84 terabytes of storage, 124 server connections and 256 megabytes of battery-protected memory.
