Samsung Selects Broadcom's Integrated Dual-Band 802.11n Wi-Fi® Solution for a Wide Range of Blu-ray Disc® Players


Broadcom's Leading Blu-ray Disc® Platform Delivers the Ultimate High Definition Video User Experience for Home Entertainment

LAS VEGAS - 2011 International CES -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has selected its integrated dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi® system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution to power its line-up of connected Blu-ray Disc players. Samsung had already selected Broadcom's leading-edge Blu-ray SoC solution to deliver the outstanding quality audio/video and BD-Java performance for which Broadcom is recognized.

Samsung Apps, the world's first HDTV-based application store, provides consumers with an expanded, easy-to-navigate selection of content and applications from leading online providers and services. Consumers can stream movies from Netflix® or Blockbuster®, TV shows from Hulu(TM), videos from YouTube®, Next Level sports information from ESPN, music from Pandora® and view updates on their Facebook or Twitter accounts. By integrating Broadcom's high quality Wi-Fi technology, consumers will have the flexibility to access this content wirelessly, avoiding the painful experience of running multiple cables to their video rack.

Highlights/Key Facts:

o According to In-Stat, approximately 61.7 million Blu-ray players will
ship with Wi-Fi by 2014 -- an increase of 772 percent over projections
for 2010.

o To enable the latest in wireless connectivity features, including video
streaming, Samsung integrated wireless LAN (WLAN) capability by using
the Broadcom® BCM43236 SoC solution on both of their Blu-ray platforms.
The BCM43236 is the world's first complete dual-band single-chip 802.11n
solution for universal serial bus (USB) applications. As part of
Broadcom's Intensi-fi® WLAN portfolio, the BCM43236 enables high
performance, small form-factor and cost effective solutions for CE
devices. The BCM43236 can also be used to add high performance wireless
connectivity as an 'after market' USB device that plugs into an external
port. Additional features of the BCM43236 include:

o An integrated 802.11n baseband and media access controller (MAC)
with two radios (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) that support both single-stream
and dual-stream operation. Accelerange® technology that provides a
unique set of hardware and software enhancements to provide higher
throughput and more robust wireless coverage in the far corners of a
home.

o Complete support of the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) Wi-Fi Direct(TM)
peer-to-peer functionality that is fully interoperable and compliant
with the Wi-Fi Alliance® specification.

o An integrated ARM® processor and on-chip RAM that can offload
wireless functions from the host processor in consumer devices.

o The Broadcom BCM7633 single-chip Blu-ray platform powers Samsung's
Blu-ray players and combines proven optical front-end and back-end video
decoding and display technology while adding support for 3D and
feature-rich Internet-based streaming applications. Additional features
of the BCM7633 include:

o The most advanced Blu-ray Disc player SoC available, giving
customers the highest levels of system integration that offers
significant cost efficiencies and is helping to drive the mass
adoption of Blu-ray technology.

o Support for Internet-based streaming applications such as Netflix,
Pandora Internet Radio, VUDU(TM) and CinemaNow®.
