Ocean Optics Introduces Versatile Variable-Angle Sampling Chamber

The RSS-VA system uses fiber optics to both illuminate and characterize optical substrates at angles from 10° to 50°

Dunedin, Fla., June 2003 -- Ocean Optics has expanded its optics line with the new Variable-angle Reflection Sampling System (RSS-VA), a compact optomechanical device that couples to spectrometers and light sources to measure spectral reflectance of optical substrates from 200-1100 nm at varying angles of incidence. The modular RSS-VA is designed for use with Ocean Optics spectroscopic systems and spectral reflectance standards, but can be connected to other spectroscopic systems via a fiber optic adapter. The versatile variable-angle device is ideal for characterizing a variety of optical substrates, especially metallic and dielectric coatings.

The RSS-VA has a black anodized stainless-steel chamber with two ports for SMA 905-terminated optical fibers -- one to illuminate the sample, the other to send the signal to the spectrometer -- and a three-point fixed surface mount for retaining the sample position. Inside the chamber, carrier-mounted optics can be user-adjusted to angles of incidence from 10° to 50°. A thumbscrew locks the optical assembly at a fixed angle.

The RSS-VA is $1,400, and is also available with an adapter ($99) to accommodate smaller optics. With the adapter, the sampling port aperture measures 10 mm x 3 mm; the standard sample port aperture measures 19.0 mm x 6.4 mm.
