Salco Technologies Obtains Intrinsically Safe UL913 Certifications for Remote Monitoring Equipment

Lemont, Illinois - Salco Technologies, Inc., a supplier of satellite communications equipment to transportation-related industries, has announced it has received the Underwriters Laboratories UL913 Intrinsically Safe Certifications for the EverSee2 satellite communications product and monitoring sensors, which provide value-added information.

This UL913 (Class I, II, III, Division I, Hazardous Locations) certification allows the EverSee2 and it's monitoring sensors to be used on applications where intrinsically safe criteria is required, such as during the transportation, loading and unloading of a flammable liquid, a flammable compressed gas, or an oxidizing material. For rail freight applications, in which intrinsically safe devices are required, this certification is necessary for the application of Remote Monitoring Equipment as outlined by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

The EverSee2 is a self-contained telemetry remote-monitoring device that utilizes Low-Earth-Orbiting satellites to report the location of non-powered assets. It is a duplex (two-way) device that transmits global positioning system (GPS) coordinates through scheduled intervals, or upon the occurrence of predefined events/alarms. It also features polling on demand, allows for over-the-air (OTA) commands and was developed to meet requirements proposed by the Department of Homeland Security railroad freight security legislation. The EverSee2 is battery-operated, solar-charged, and is commonly used to track and monitor non-powered assets. These assets include containers and railcars that carry hazardous materials, Toxic Inhalation Hazard (TIHs) materials, Poison Inhalation Hazard (PIHs) materials or anywhere in which two-way communication from an asset is desired.

Working in conjunction with sensors, the Eversee2 monitors conditions and reports events and alarms. With these certifications, Salco is able to offer a suite of intrinsically safe, asset monitoring sensors such as: open/close manway sensor, temperature sensor, chemical leak sniffer sensor, empty/full load sensor, and much more.

"The tracking and monitoring of remote assets is critical to public safety and welfare," says Dave Oestermeyer, president of Salco Technologies, LLC. "Homeland Security has addressed the priority of safety and security in the way rail freight is handled and Salco has responded. Besides the added security, asset tracking and monitoring also serves to improve shipment visibility through operational efficiencies that may result in cost reduction. Corporations realize efforts to improve supply chain visibility and security may also reduce transit times and resolve other trade transit issues."

Salco's EversSee2, and other satellite communications equipment from its line of remote monitoring devices, is currently installed on some of the nation's largest chemical shippers. In addition, data from its satellite communications devices can be integrated into a corporation's current asset management software system. Training and full engineering support, including AAR required documents and drawings for remote monitoring equipment (RME), are also provided by Salco.
