Schneider Electric Introduces Affordable Alternative to Safety PLC

PALATINE, IL. - March 1, 2004 - A new multi-functional, configurable safety relay that complies with global machine safety standards has been introduced by Schneider Electric. The Telemecanique® Preventa(TM) XPS-MC safety relay is a practical and affordable alternative to safety PLCs since it doesn't require replacing legacy programmable logic controllers to achieve compliance.

The new safety relay is designed for applications requiring multiple simultaneous safety functions. It features 22 certified safety functions for applications that must conform to category 4 of EN 954-1. These functions, which include monitoring of emergency stops, guards, two-hand control, coded magnetic switches, zero speed detection, safety mats or security light curtains, can be configured with XPS MCWIN software running under Windows.

The Preventa XPS-MC comes with software that provides multiple options for combining any of the 22 certified functions and for start-up programming of the relay. Once configured, the file can be copied onto a CD for record-keeping or transferred from a PC to the XPS-MC controller, which has a built-in interface for communications and diagnostics.

Two versions of the relay are available - with either 16 or 32 safety inputs and eight outputs. It is available with plug-in connectors fitted with either screw or spring terminals.

The new Preventa XPS-MC safety relay is part of a growing family of Telemecanique machine safeguarding products, including safety relays, interlocks and light curtains, developed to meet emerging global safety standards.
