Rubb Aircraft Hangars are Topflight Solution for Military and Aviation Sectors

In 2014, Rubb's sales relating to aircraft hangars have increased significantly.

Developments in military hangar design do feed into civilian solutions. We use our experience and knowledge from working on Urgent Operation Requirements for the UK military to quickly complete hangar facilities within very tight project timescales. Organisations in the civilian sector can also benefit from elements of our military range, including our innovative Heli-Door system and roof mounted crane technology.

Recent projects 2014

NPAS

The National Police Air Service needed a new helicopter hangar after moving its Dorset base from police HQ to Bournemouth Airport. Rubb helped NPAS meet that requirement with a custom designed aircraft hangar measuring 26m span x 17m long, with 7.5m high sidewalls. A Rubb Heli-Door in the front gable provides a clear opening of 21.5m wide x 5.5m high. The rear gable end includes a 4m x 4m roller shutter door and one personnel door. Each sidewall includes an additional personnel door for access and egress. The Rubb 'BVE' aviation structure features Rubb's traditional galvanized internal steel frame and a tapered lattice leg design. The building is clad with durable PVC Ferrari fabric, providing Sargaso blue walls and roof.

NHV

A civilian helicopter operator has selected a Rubb Military aircraft hangar as a storage solution for its new EC175s at Wick John O'Groats Airport. The storage and maintenance hangar will be used by the NHV Group, a fast growing international aviation services company. Noordzee Helicopters Vlaanderen specialises in business-to-business aviation services. The Rubb hangar will be used for storage and maintenance of NHV's two EC175 aircraft.

NHV's aircraft storage facility from Rubb's Expeditionary Forces Aircraft Shelter System (EFASS) range features a span width of 20m x 44m long with a closed rear gable end. Access is via a 17.7m wide x 5.5m high Heli-Door. The door is electrically operated via two slow moving helical geared motors, with emergency hand operation capability. This system does not require a base foundation or ramps. The door goes up and down at the touch of a button. Locking and safety devices operate automatically. The EFASS hangar aluminium framework has been designed to maximise strength, minimise weight and still be robust enough to withstand the most challenging environments. The high quality 6082 T6 structural aluminium is annodised black and steel components are hot dipped galvanized to protect from corrosion. The tough PVC covering tensioned membrane forms the protective barrier between the environment and the aircraft and equipment inside. This hangar is clad with double skin insulated fabric panels to accommodate and facilitate HVAC procedures.

Aerohub

A Rubb aviation hangar building project has assumed a prominent position at Aerohub, the UK's only aerospace focused Enterprise Zone, based in Newquay, Cornwall. The project provides a large, bespoke space for Apple Aviation Group's (AAG) increased Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) operations. Apple Aviation has selected Aerohub @ Newquay Cornwall Airport as the location for its aerospace maintenance facility headquarters. The Rubb team constructed the main steel framework for the hangar in April 2014 and then fixed Thermohall insulated PVC cladding to the structure to create its roof and walls. The Rubb hangar provides 25,000 sq. ft. of aircraft storage and maintenance space. The facility measures 47m wide x 50m long with 8m high sidewalls and an overall height of 18m. A Megadoor measuring 43m wide x 14m at its highest point provides access to the hangar.

Rubb will also be providing additional aircraft hangar facilities for the UK MoD and Lithuanian Air Force.

We work very closely with our clients, from initial enquiry, through to design, manufacture, installation and beyond. Every civilian and military aircraft hangar is custom designed and manufactured to suit our clients' requirements and their range of aircraft, MRO operations and logistical needs. Requirements vary from project to project, but Rubb is able to supply a wide range of bespoke solutions to address each set of circumstances on a project by project basis.

Most of our design and production processes are completed in house. Installation is mostly completed by Rubb's own construction teams. Rubb has been working on UK MoD and civilian aviation projects for more than 35 years so we have the knowledge, experience, expertise and innovations to pass on to our customers.

Functional capacity plays a very important role in hangar design. Rubb ensures all requests regarding product capability from the client are addressed within the designated budget and time frames. Rubb also works closely with the client, architects and contractors to ensure aesthetic considerations are also taken into account. Aesthetics tend to be considered more important in the civilian aviation marketplace, however more and more commercial organisations are favouring Rubb's military EFASS product for their civilian ventures due to the practical functional advantages they provide.

Rubb has seen a trend for increased need for rapid deployment structures and has responded with ongoing development and innovation of the EFASS (Expeditionary Forces Aircraft Shelter System) portfolio. There have been requests for the system to support all kinds of craft from fixed wing, rotorcraft and UAVS to land vehicles and MRO activity. There has been an increased demand for this product in the civilian aviation sector.
