RTCoA Debuts First Wi-Fi Based Smart Thermostat Powered by GainSpan

NEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 17 -- Radio Thermostat Company of America (RTCoA) today unveiled its first Wi-Fi based programmable communicating thermostat, the CT80, based on GainSpan's GS1010 SoC (System on Chip) device. Designed specially for energy management (AMR/AMI) and home automation applications, the thermostat can connect to the homeowner's Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi gives programmability access to the thermostat from any computer and helps consumers conserve energy, save money and reduce their environmental impact without the need for costly infrastructure.

"We chose to use the highly optimized Wi-Fi SoC from Gainspan as it enables our thermostats to connect to the existing standards based Wi-Fi home network," said Dan Goodman, Chief Technical Officer of RTCoA and their partner company Golden Power Manufacturing.

With a full dot-matrix LCD screen, the CT80 is extremely versatile as a three stage heat, two stage cool, Programmable Communicating Thermostat with in-home display capability. This thermostat is 100% guaranteed compatible with all popular HVAC systems and also has the capability to accept two communication modules simultaneously. RTCoA adds Wi-Fi capability to the thermostat using a radio module, designed with the GS1010 ultra-low power Wi-Fi SoC which plugs into the communicating port(s) of the thermostat.

"We are proud to provide the technology that enables the deployment of energy management devices like the RTCoA thermostat and in-home display units," said Vijay Parmar, GainSpan CEO. "Wi-Fi based ultra-low power silicon for AMR/AMI and Home automation applications will not only enable home energy conservation but also lower costs by leveraging the vast penetration of residential Wi-Fi hotspots."

With the RTCoA Wi-Fi thermostat technology platform, Utilities can establish two-way communications to send customers new rate structure messages, notices of demand response alerts and events to drive reduction of peak demand. Complete system solutions including various options and application software will become available within the next several months.
