Solace Systems introduces Carrier-Ready Value-Added Services Routing System

VRS/32 Platform Enables New Revenue-Generating Value-Added Services for Service Providers

OTTAWA, April 10 / Solace Systems today announced the general availability of the VRS/32 Value-Added Services (VAS) Routing System, the next generation in their market-leading value-added services platform. Solace's VRS/32 platform adds an additional layer of functionality to existing IP/MPLS networks and increases network intelligence by making the network content-aware. With VAS routing, service providers move beyond simple provisioning of network connections to create new application-level value- added services for enterprise and consumer customers.

Service providers are looking to expand the scope of relationships with customers beyond the network level to become trusted providers of business and consumer services. Today, most service providers shuttle bits through pipes and leave enterprise application issues to be resolved by software and services in datacenters while consumer application revenues are often captured by third parties. The Solace VRS/32 VAS Routing System is an evolutionary step in content networking that moves application-level functionality into the network and transforms bit-pipe networks into intelligent application exchange systems. With the scalable VRS architecture, service providers can deliver utility-style on demand computing by embedding key application-level functionality directly into the network.

"Service providers are telling us that their top priority is to develop and deliver value-added services," said Peter Ashton, Vice President of Product Management at Solace Systems. "The managers in charge of these initiatives are seeking a technology that enables them to offer multiple services, from supply chain order routing to IPTV advertising metadata management, using a single infrastructure for multiple clients. Solace's VRS/32 is the only carrier-ready solution that can enable service providers to deliver application-aware value-added services."

By deploying the VRS/32 VAS Routing System, carrier networks become on demand content networks where publishers of information are decoupled from subscribers, leaving networks to manage content and security in between. The network uses special purpose hardware within the Solace VRS/32 routers to evaluate application content and make filtering, routing and transformation decisions as shared services on behalf of all applications. The net effect is that subscribing users and systems receive interest driven real-time information from multiple sources as soon as the information is published to the network.

According to IDC Research Analyst Rona Shuchat, "As information sharing between organizations and individuals has increased in volume and sophistication, shared services supporting secure information exchange have begun to emerge. As global and regional service providers incorporate key application-level functionality within their networks to enable secure data transfer, they will capitalize on the revenue opportunity tied to delivering utility-style on demand computing."

While the potential applications enabled by the Solace VRS platform are innumerable, the areas Solace is working with customers are:
- Financial information services
- Supply chain networks
- Government services
- Regulatory compliance services
- Real-time wide-area information synchronization
- Desktop and mobile content distribution and alerting
- IPTV personalization

VRS/32 Value-Added Services Routing System Details

The VRS/32 VAS Routing System consists of:
- The core VRS/32 Value-Added Services Router, a carrier-grade chassis with redundant system elements.
- The VRS/32-02 XML Routing Module, specialized hardware that adds XML inspection, filtering, routing and forwarding to the VAS router.
- The VRS/32-04 XSLT Transformation Module, specialized hardware that adds format conversion of XML and other types of content as it passes through the network.
- The VRS/32-06 Advanced Interface Module, specialized hardware for increased throughput and accelerated line rates for VAS content processing.
- SolOS 3.0, the industry's leading operating system for large-scale VAS routing.

Each Solace VAS router is configured with the appropriate modules to suit the needs of the service profile it is delivering.

Key features of the system include:
- Advanced custom silicon to process, filter, and forward messages at wire-speed.
- Industry's first content-aware control plane that extends OSPF-like routing protocols into the application layer.
- Unique network virtualization capability for secure service deployments on shared infrastructure.
- Up to four Gigabit Ethernet ports supporting link aggregation.
- High reliability platform including full active-active failover support, RAID protected storage and hot swappable, redundant power supplies.
- Comprehensive end-to-end security to ensure integrity of the content and the infrastructure.
- Support for legacy messaging standards using purpose-built adapters.
- Automated provisioning for self-serve, controlled access to individual network subscriptions.

The VRS/32 VAS Router, VRS/32-02 XML Routing Module and VRS/32-04 XSLT Transformation Module are available now. The VRS/32-06 Advanced Interface Module is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2006.
