Foundry Networks Resets the Industry Standard With the Introduction of the World's Most Powerful Internet and Metro Core Routers

NetIron XMR 32000 Core Router and NetIron MLX-32 Metro Router Establish a Superior Class of 100 Gigabit Ethernet-ready Multi-Terabit IPv4/IPv6/MPLS Core and Metro Routers With Unmatched Performance and Rich Functionality at a Fraction the Price of Alternative Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 2 / -- Foundry Networks(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced the NetIron(R) XMR 32000 Internet and MPLS core router and the NetIron MLX-32 MPLS-enabled metro router at the Interop(R) Las Vegas 2006. These new products establish a new class of IPv4/IPv6/MPLS routers designed for the emerging broadband service provider infrastructure that will cement the foundation for triple play and quadruple play services, as well as converged backbone and broadband VPN offerings that will define next generation service provider networks. They offer a unique combination of advanced service delivery capabilities, high-versatility, superior port density, and increased traffic capacity.

Internet traffic is growing at a significant rate due to more bandwidth intensive applications and the growing broadband user population worldwide. Engineered to meet the current and future needs of the service provider, the NetIron XMR 32000 and the NetIron MLX-32 are designed to have the highest 10GbE and GbE density available to address current and forthcoming service provider capacity requirements. The NetIron XMR 32000 and NetIron MLX-32 are Foundry's latest additions to the NetIron XMR Series and NetIron MLX Series respectively. These additions represent a major breakthrough in router performance and capacity by providing two billion packets per second (Bpps) of IP/MPLS routing, and up to 128 non-blocking 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) ports in single system. These new routers increase rack performance to an unparalleled 4 Bpps, and 256 non-blocking 10-GbE ports. The routers are powered by a fully redundant non-blocking 7.68 terabits per second (Tbps) switch fabric based on state-of-the-art Clos fabric architecture. The massive capacity of these routers will enable bandwidth intensive applications, such as video on-demand, broadcast television, and large scale Voice over IP (VoIP). The routers also feature carrier-class hardware and software resiliency, as well as highly scalable service delivery capabilities.

Both the NetIron XMR 32000 and NetIron MLX-32 feature 32 interface module slots to enable granular pay as you grow capacity scaling. Leveraging Foundry's fifth generation architecture, the routers offer full wire-speed non-blocking performance on all ports for all services including IPv4, IPv6, MPLS TE, and MPLS VPNs.

The new routers allow for large capital expenditure (CapEx) savings by offering compelling alternatives to costly multi-chassis router clusters -- utilizing proprietary interconnects -- at one tenth the cost. In addition, both routers are purpose built to alleviate operational expenditure (OpEx) by significantly reducing rack space, power consumption, and cooling requirements as opposed to a multi-chassis designs. Each of the NetIron XMR 32000 and NetIron MLX-32 utilizes standard interface modules from their respective series, the NetIron XMR and NetIron MLX Series. Interface module portability and reusability significantly reduces sparing costs and company training costs, thereby providing superior economies of scale.

"Service providers are actively seeking viable solutions to manage the growing capacity explosion in data traffic, IP based voice traffic, and broadband adoption," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder, Infonetics Research, Inc. "They will want to consider a router that can offer ultra-high capacity, cost efficient use of 10GbE, and can scale to support the current and future rapid traffic growth, as these capabilities are key to their next generation converged networks."

Like all members of their respective series, the NetIron XMR 32000 and NetIron MLX-32 routers offer state-of-the-art resiliency for maximizing service availability and up time. The routers feature redundant management, redundant switch fabric, redundant power supplies, and redundant cooling components. A state-of-the-art fabric design ensures continued operation even under low probability high impact events, including multiple partial/full fabric failures where the system continues to operate in Degraded Capacity Mode, tuning its performance gracefully to the remaining fabric capacity. A suite of rapid convergence protocols, MPLS Fast Reroute, advanced Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) functions, hitless management failover, graceful restart, and hitless software upgrades radically enhance end-to-end service availability. The routers are powered by Foundry's Multi-Service IronWare operating system, a powerful, multi-tasking, modular, secure, and resilient operating system with advanced routing and MPLS capabilities.

The NetIron XMR and MLX series offer complementary carrier-class provider edge to core solutions for Internet and metro routing that dramatically reduce the cost of implementing converged broadband networks. Utilizing the built-in 10-GbE WAN PHY capability, providers can connect the routers to the existing SONET/SDH or DWDM infrastructure, thereby preserving their current investment in the optical transport layer. Featuring low-latency, non-blocking redundant switch fabric architecture, wire-speed programmable network processors, and granular traffic management, these routers deliver the performance, system resilience, service richness and Quality of Service (QoS) that will benefit a wide range of network providers. This includes Internet service providers, IP carrier's carriers, cable network operators, VoIP telephony infrastructures, mobile phone providers, triple and quadruple play operators.

Built for providing the best protection on investment and increasing infrastructure longevity, both the NetIron XMR and NetIron MLX Series lead the industry by providing true 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet readiness in order to enable full support for the anticipated next phase in Ethernet's evolution.

The NetIron XMR Series is a family of high capacity and high scalability Internet and MPLS core routers. Designed for scaling service provider cores, and long haul national backbones, the XMR series features massive dual stack IPv4/IPv6 routing capacities up to 10 Million BGP routes, 500 BGP peers, and up to 1 Million IPv4 routes in hardware. In addition, the series enables large scale MPLS traffic engineering, as well as high capacity MPLS VPN services including MPLS Virtual Leased Line (VLL), Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS), and BGP/MPLS VPNs (RFC 2547bis).

The NetIron MLX Series is a family of high performance metro and Internet edge routers. The addition of the NetIron MLX-32 router offers a powerful solution for high density Internet edge and metro Ethernet service delivery. In addition, the MLX-32 is a powerful enabler of large scale Internet data center and high performance computing (HPC) clusters. All routers of the NetIron MLX Series feature a consistent feature set that offers a unique mix of IPv4/IPv6 routing, virtual routing via Multi-VRF, MPLS-based services, and advanced metro Ethernet services based on the upcoming IEEE 802.1ad (Provider Bridges) and IEEE 802.1ah (Provider Backbone Bridges).

"Prior to the NetIron XMR and MLX series, service providers lacked choice when implementing a core routing solution," said Bobby Johnson, president and chief executive officer for Foundry Networks. "They were often forced to select costly systems with high ongoing maintenance costs that did not protect their infrastructure investment from future demands. Foundry's NetIron XMR 32000 resolves the inadequacies of past systems with an edge-to-core solution that not only future-proofs service providers' networks but also delivers unparalleled performance, reliability, scalability and resiliency at a fraction the price of alternative solutions."
