Compact Rotary Switch Features Dual-Function On/Off Potentiometer in Single Unit Space for Compact Panel Applications

South El Monte, CA - April 4, 2003 - Offering a combination of rotary switch and potentiometer capability in a new miniaturized configuration, Electro-Mech Components has introduced the SW44212 Pot/Switch. Dual functionality enables a smaller panel or board footprint for installation, saving valuable space in applications with tight design requirements. The compact all-in-one unit is ideally suited for aircraft, medical and industrial or portable instrumentation applications.

The SW44212 features a non-illuminated switch with silver-plated contacts and provides a tactile click for assured on/off contact confirmation. Switch functions are from beginning of clock-wise (CW) normally open (NO) rotation and offer a mechanical rotational life of 50,000 cycles minimum. For added installation versatility, the unit is available with three shaft lengths - 0.500", 0.875" and 2.500", and meets IP67 environmental seal requirements for harsh environments and MIL-SPEC requirements, including 50G shock (11 ms) and 10-55Hz vibration. Operating temperature ranges from -55° to +125°C.

A conductive plastic resistive element provides resistance values from 10KOhms to 500KOhms, with an electrical travel of 270° ±10°. The unit is rated a 30VDC or 115VAC, 2A resistive. 0.5A inductive. For interface flexibility, the unit is provided standard with EMC terminal solder lugs, but can also be provided with thru-hole PCB pins for plug-in installations.

The entire assembly is compactly packaged into a small 0.52" square x 0.655" depth (behind panel) housing. Threaded mounting bushing is ¼-32 threaded; Switch terminations are located at the rear of the housing with potentiometer terminals at the base of the integral center module.

Resistive elements for the potentiometer are available in conductive plastic (P11) or cermet (PA11) to meet customer requirements. Special shaft lengths or threaded shaft is available. Shaft diameter is 0.125", available in the three lengths cited above, with flatted shaft.
