Renishaw RESR Rotary Encoders Save Cost, Space, Complexity in High-Accuracy Angular Positioning

Industries turning to robust RESR Encoders for high performance, high reliability, speeds to 2900 rpm, resolution to 0.1 arc seconds, and installation simplicity

September 2004 - A revolution in price and performance, one-piece RESR Rotary Encoders from Renishaw make high-accuracy angular positioning easy to afford and easy to mount. The non-contact optical encoders are being installed in some of the most demanding positioning applications, such as direct drive motors, precision rotary tables and machining heads, robots, semiconductor and fiberoptic manufacturing systems, photo imaging systems, medical and lab equipment, even astronomy.

Low-mass, low-inertia design provides accuracy to ±1.0 arc second, resolution to 0.01 arc seconds, up to 129.6 million counts per revolution, and speeds to more than 2900 rpm with zero backlash. Innovative one-piece design features low-profile ring with integral scale and large through-hole. Robust construction enhances reliability. Low mass and inertia help to maximize machine performance. Space-saving configuration solves fit problems, while patented taper-mount design enables easy installation and adjustment to simplify even the trickiest installations and eliminate run-out errors. A readhead LED provides a visual guide to ensure optimum system setup.

The versatile encoders come in a wide range of diameters and line count options - degrees, arc seconds and 2n - to provide compatibility with various industry standard controllers. They are available with digital quadrature outputs ranging from 27 arc seconds to 0.01 arc second resolutions. Optional models provide UHV, non-magnetic, and ultra-low inertia capabilities.

Sized for shafts from 30 to 392 mm diameter (1.18" to 15.43"), the high-performance encoders provide line counts from 4096 to 64,800 with up to 2000X interpolation. This gives up to 129.6 million counts per revolution and resolutions down to 0.01 arc seconds with zero backlash.

The rotary ring encoders complement Renishaw's extensive range of linear encoders that deliver high reliability and outstanding precision in difficult manufacturing environments. The rotary encoders share Renishaw's proven non-contact readhead design and filtering optics. These provide high tolerance to dirt, scratches and greasy fingerprints that can cause other encoder systems to miscount. A repeatable reference mark is available with readheads to provide a home (datum) position.
