Rotary Encoder has commutation and serial interface.

Press Release Summary:

RCM15si combines brushless motor commutation pulses and incremental position feedback in one optical encoder. Index and commutation information is transmitted via RS 485 serial interface, which also allows for motor and controller setup. Available with resolutions up to 2048 lines, encoder provides commutation for 4, 6, or 8 pole brushless motors. It features slide/gap mechanism and built-in servo groove that allows ±20° rotation of encoder.

Rotary Encoder with Commutation and Serial Interface

Renco Encoders, inc. of Goleta, CA; announces its RCM15si, a 1.5" diameter rotary optical encoder with commutation and serial interface. The RCM15si combines brushless motor commutation pulses and incremental position feedback in a single optical encoder. The RS 485 serial interface allows for easy motor and controller setup since motor and encoder parameters are stored in the encoders EEPROM. Because index and commutation information is transmitted serially, the wire count from the encoder is reduced. A single LED and sensor arrangement reduces cost while improving performance and reliability of the brushless motor/encoder package.

The RCM15si features RENCO's patented slide/gap mechanism for ease of installation and maximum performance. A built-in servo groove allows ±20° rotation of the encoder to align the commutation tracks with the motor poles.

The RCM15si is available with resolutions up to 2048 lines and provides commutation for 4, 6 or 8 pole brushless motors. For more information on the wide range of rotary optical encoders that are available, please contact Ed Burk at:
