Robotic Production Technology Awarded U.S. Patent on Compliant Knife

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 3, 2006 - Robotic Production Technology, Inc. (RPT) has been allowed a U.S. Patent for its compliant knife technology. This technology is the key to successful automation of injection-molded and blow-molded part deflashing. The newly patented compliant knife compensates for part shrinkage and expansion typical to these plastic forming processes and allows users to have the compliance required along curved or 90-degree angle parting lines.

The compliant knife, when integrated into a robotic system, allows RPT to provide customers with a solution that increases productivity, improves trim edge quality, reduces scrap and improves employee safety. The automatic process removes sharp blades from the hands of employees and eradicates common workplace injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

"RPT has had significant success delivering systems to our customers with our patent-pending knife, and now that the patent has been granted, it reinforces the unique solution that RPT is offering to the marketplace," said Chuck Russo, CEO of RPT. "We are seeing increased complexity to parts formed in these processes with demands for improved final part quality. Automating these deflashing processes is critical to delivering that quality in a cost effective manner."

Robotic Production Technology has a firm commitment to save U.S. manufacturing plants by investing in developing new technologies.

"Robotic Production Technology is committed to helping save U.S. manufacturing plants," said Kevin McManus, president, Robotic Production Technology. "We do this by investing in a variety of new trimming technologies and helping our customers to adopt flexible automation as a primary way to effectively compete against lower labor rates in other countries."
