SAMSys Introduces Gen 2 RFID UHF Reader; New MP9320 v2.8 Speeds Gen 2

TORONTO, June 29 - SAMSys Technologies Inc. (SMY: TSX), an international provider of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) hardware solutions, today introduced the first commercially available RFID UHF reader that is capable of reading tags that conform to the EPC Generation Two (Gen 2) standard. The new SAMSys MP9320 v2.8 reader also supports the full array of first-generation tag protocols, making it possible to deploy Gen 2 tags alongside legacy RFID installations without having to change the entire tag infrastructure.

SAMSys is releasing the MP9320 v2.8 now in order to help organizations quickly migrate to the Gen 2 protocol when the new tags become available later this year. Consumer packaged goods companies, retailers, system integrators and others can use the reader to begin developing, testing and implementing Gen 2 programs in preparation for full deployment.

The new reader is already being used by Gen 2 tag suppliers such as Texas Instruments to test their own Gen 2 tags as they come off the production line. It has also been approved for use in the U.S. Department of Defense's RFID supply chain initiative, based in part on its support for the Gen 2 standard.

As the latest addition to the SAMSys family of multi-protocol, multi-regional, UHF RFID readers, the MP9320 v2.8 reader supports EPC Class 0 and 0+, EPC Class 1, ISO 18000-6A, ISO 18000-6B, Philips UCODE 1.19, EM 4222 and Intellitag tag protocols as well as Gen 2 in a single chassis. Different versions will be available for North American FCC (902-928 MHz), European ETSI (865-869 MHz) and Asian regulatory environments. The reader can be used for a wide variety of applications, including warehouse logistics, item-level inventory tracking, container tracking, pallet tracking, asset management and baggage handling.

In addition to being first to market with Gen 2 support, the SAMSys reader is the first to be licensed under Intermec Technology Corp.'s intellectual property licensing program. This provides resellers and end user customers with full patent indemnity protection with regard to Intermec's IP claims. The reader is also covered by SAMSys' 'TruBlue Gen 2' Assurance Plan, ensuring full interoperability with EPC Global and ISO compliant UHF RFID tags.

"This new reader showcases two of the factors that set SAMSys apart: our ongoing commitment to the multi-protocol and multi-frequency strategy that we literally invented, and our ability to quickly add new protocols as standards evolve because of the architecture we developed and patented to make that possible," said Cliff Horwitz, chairman, CEO and president of SAMSys Technologies Inc.

"This is why we were able to be the first out of the gate with a Gen 2 reader while also providing support for legacy tag protocols, a critical requirement for organizations that already have implemented RFID programs. More than any of our previous products, this reader proves the value of our architecture and its importance to the marketplace moving forward."

The new MP9320 v2.8 reader is in beta test now with early adopter customers of the new Gen 2 tags and will be released for general availability on July 30. It has a suggested list price of $2,999, with reseller discounts available. For more information, email samsys@samsys.com, visit samsys.com, or call 919-281-1541 or toll-free at 877-367-4342.
